A bit premature as we don't know the cause of the death
20 years ago I was on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in disneyworld, some kids in the front of our boat jumped off at the dock, ran along it and got in the boat in front, had they fallen into the water they would most likely have been mangled because the water is just a decoration, it's a slow moving chain underneath.
Staff were right on it though, at the next dock somebody identified them and security threw them out of the park at the end of the ride
There have been a lot of deaths at theme parks but most are due to riders not obeying the rules

An 11-year-old girl has died after falling from a rapids ride at Drayton Manor theme park
Premature nah I read the report, the little girl should not have been able to get out of the seat. It should have been locked so as to have not it happen.

Whatever happened I'm not here to argue, my opinion still lies with the fact that we seem to hear more of this happenening every year. As to symantics of whether it was a " report " as in a news report or police " report " I'm sorry I only have a GCSE in English.

The only way to stop accidents is to close everything down, they will happen. Too early to say if it was a fault, staff negligence or someone taking a risk and paying the price.

I saw this on the news earlier, terrible tragedy, seems she died on the way to hospital, in the air ambulance

At 11 she should be responsible enough not to get out of her seat. These rapids rides are nothing new and been around for 30yrs or more. I wouldn't want to be strapped to a seat just in case by some freak accident the boat capsized.

Those rapids "boats" are fairly hard to just fall out of even when they are being tossed around in the water. They have a pretty good safety record until now, so there is a strong chance this 11 year old child was doing something she shouldn't have been such as standing on the seat or leaning right over the side. If it's anything like the ones I have been on at various theme parks, you sit on the seat and try to rotate a wheel in the centre which causes the boat to rotate as it moves along in the water.

Just watched the first video I found on YouTube
As you can see, there are no seat belts on this ride so riders are expected to sit down in the seat.

It shows like a safety bar in the centre of the ride in a circle as well.
This is going to be one of those accidents where the girl has not been holding on and probably leaning out or standing up all of a sudden and just a tilt and she's out.
Also the video there shows loads of CCTV so it will be all on camea.

Yes, there's a round bar in the centre of the seat but in the video you can see a young boy who's having sit forward out of the seat to reach it. The height limit on the ride is 90cm so I guess it's designed for smaller/younger riders to be safe so would assume this was a tragic unforeseen accident.

Agreed. Every version of that ride I've been on the sides have been pretty high. I don't see how you could fall out if seated correctly.
Either way though it's sad to hear.

my 10 cents; safety protocol is played over the tanoy whilst queuing and there are also posters to read, kids being kids, who ever listens or reads these, especially when youre all giddy with school mates.
There is also a woman on a news report stating her son fell overboard but was rescued thankfully and she slammed the ride for being unsafe, reality being, it is also said the boy was standing up to try and get a better photo.... what do you expect!! seriously.
I would put 2 + 2 together and saying the current generation of selfie taking and lack of common sense because I want to be viral could pay a role in this.
All being said, thoughts are with the family

It's always somebody else's fault, , It's a tragedy but i'd say kids being kids chances are she was standing up , how else could she have fallen out
I was out walking the dog , some lads of 12-13 were trying to impress a girl, one of them was the wrong side of the safety barrier on a bridge letting go with one hand then catching himself with the other being egged on by the other kids
I couldn't walk past that so told him to get back over then spelled out his s*** life if he'd fallen, bushes 20ft below so wheelchair, paralysed, and do you think any of this lot will be coming to visit you when you're eating through a straw
hopefully it had the desired effect

I read that these types of rides do not have seatbelts in case it capsizes and then you are trapped in it - which makes sense
Not been on this specific ride, but many others like it and it can get jolty when you hit things/the sides etc, you are told to sit down and hold on. Video shows lots of signs along the route and also in the boat itself.
i guess we will know more when all the evidence is collected and H&S report done. Slightly different scenario than the big rollercoaster accident.

You only get fined if you're either taking the mick with attendance generally or you haven't requested the time off in advance.
Every day in school doesn't have to be behind a desk or inside a book. It does everyone some good to have days away from the same surrounding (and that's from a dad of a 10 and 7 year old who is always paying for one thing or another at school!)
We always try to get 100% attendance (where possible) and give back to the school by helping when we can. As a result, we requested 9 days off in October to take our kids to Florida and the head teacher approved it with no problems. Not everyone gets fined for taking their kids out of school, even if the media loves the story.

The cynic in me can't help thinking that this one will be cheaper for the park('s insurers) than the roller coaster injuries were.
But its "OK" if the teachers fancy a jolly though eh?
