Another question on the C.R.B. checks

We've been doing football gala's for the last 4 years and this year we have a new gala to do and they've asked to see our crb certificates. I was under the impression that photographers didn't need them. We have never been asked about them before with all the other gala's we've done and we are never on a one to one as there are always hundreds of people around.
I contacted our local F.A. to ask for advice and they have sent an email to the F.A. in the area of this new gala that we have with the following from the email " to advise that under the ‘Regulated Activity’ roles for a CRC, they are not eligible to have a CRC via the FA. However, I assume that they do have valid CRC’s through White Rose Photography that they could produce?".
There's no problem with any of us having the check it's just a matter of where we would get one done if as it says on the F.A. website that photographers don't need them. (n)

You shouldn't need one if you are not left alone with the children, but 'they' seem to think you may do something with the photos if you're not checked. If you want you could get a basic check done online for £25 (sourced in Scotland but covers England and Wales too). You can do that yourself without going through an organisation. It might satisfy the football gala.

I, and others, have posted quite a bit of good stuff in here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/crb-checks-for-photography.540307/#post-6240322
It's a sore subject, because as you say you don't "need" one. I'd suggest explaining this to the organisers. If the alternative is losing the job, then you can get them done via an umbrella body. One such organisation is disclosure Scotland. They are used by a lot of small companies that need CRB checks carried out (now called DBS by the way!)

This is yet another way to 'tax' people. In the past these stealth taxes have almost exclusively applied to employment but now look as though they are moving towards a hobby.

What ?

how can it be a stealt tax if you don't actually need one and its not compulsory. In actual fact the DBS are very clear on who needs one and who doesn't , the issue is with the paranoid parent syndrome contingent who seem to think anyone who breathes the same air as little jonny needs to be checked.

in reality these are pretty worthless with the self employed - they are intented for employment and volunteering, and are only required for people who will have 1-1 unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults onj a regular basis. - basically to make sure you arent employing a paedophile as a nusery supervisor etc.

the other thing is that clean check doesnt necesarily mean isnt a deviant weirdo, it just hasn't ever been prosecuted for such

Thanks a lot Mike. I'd already looked at this and a lot more posts on the subject but it's hard to get through to this particular event organiser.

Thanks a lot Kipax, I'd also read your post on your site as well.

They've had this event booked in with us since November and a couple of days ago they asked for the certificates and the gala is next weekend so if they had have asked for them earlier we could have had more time to try and sort something out.
I've got an up to date enhanced certificate myself which I have to have for my other job as a driving instructor but the organiser is saying it doesn't mean a thing as it's for me being a driving instructor and not a photographer. Also the bloke who does the printing with us has an enhanced certificate for his other job but again doesn't say photographer on so they're not happy with it. It just goes to show how mad this system is when you get checked and then some people are not happy with the check as it's the same person but He or She is going to do a different job

My apologies.

I tire of all the shall I get a CRB, Should I wear a hi vis vest etc as I believe it then legitimizes the idea of forcing everyone (hence the stealth tax) to do so.

Obviously your reply is, as in all other threads, the correct response.

Nice attitude

I wouldn't like to speculate on generalities, but in this case you are completely wrong , DBS clearance is only required for a handful of jobs, and no one else is in fact forced to do so - also most of the cost of obtaining one is the fee charged by the services that arange them not the gubmint , so its hardly a stealth tax

I do photography for my sons teams and just get the manager to ask the opposing manager for permission before each game, had the odd ref/coach approach me but just say I am with the team, possibly getting a hi-wiz vest with team photog on it
