My next lens will be a Tamron 90mm macro and I'm planning on buying a flashgun to go with it. Money is very tight so I'm looking at around £100 as the ceiling. I've looked at the Nissin range - specifically the Di622 - as they have great reviews in this price range. Would one of these be adequate? I'm assuming I'm going to need the option of off camera flash for macro?

The Nissin seems like a good gun at a good price. Getting a good rep. You'll need to get a few more bits to set it up for macro, or make a DIY diffuser. Lots of ideas in the Macro section.

Specifically for macro, the Marumi ring flash will probably be better and easier. About the same price and full E-TTL exposure control http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-marumi-drf14c-ring-flash-for-canon/p1026071

Possibly the best flash for macro is a ring flash. You'll need a bigger budget though.

Thinking about ring flashes do they exist with two flash tubes eg. right and left so one could be turned of.

yes they do! I have the Sigma EM-140 DG - and you can turn one tube off. You can also use it as a master to control Nikon SB-600 - 800 - 900 speedlights.

Sometimes they don't. Then you just cover the flash tube/s with black card and BluTak.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I looked at ring flashes, but I will need the gun for other projects too and cannot justify buying both at present. I also realise I'll need a way of getting that light down close and diffusing it. I like some of the hand built directors and diffusers in the macro forum. Some innovative people here!
