Freud's painting will be sold in the blue box it has been kept in along with an oil rag and note in the Dowager's hand which reads: "Box & rag he uses in his studio containing the painting of 4 eggs given me by Lucian Freud autumn 2002, DD".

Oliver Barker, from Sotheby's which is auctioning the painting on 1 July, said: "We see Freud's tremendous virtuosity as a painter, transforming a simple subject into a work of extraordinary power - and we see the portrait of a friendship between an artist and a duchess."

what do you see?

all I see is "a nice little earner"

Its ok, wouldn't mind that to hang in our kitchen.

I have never studied art, can't claim to understand it frankly. Both my wife and my daughter could paint a picture of four eggs on a plate that looked more like four eggs on a plate (they are both 'arty') but I suppose that's not the point....but I don't really know what the point is:(

All that matters is whether you like it or not, don't like it then don't buy it :)

One of my favourites is Malevich's Black Square...Sure I think even I could paint it, but I didn't....

£150k for a small "painting"

If it was a big painting it would have fetched more ;)

It is really simple, it is only worth what someone is will to pay for it...

May be handy to prop up a kitchen table with a short leg. Anyone who paints like that should be sterilised.

Perceived value has nothing to do with many of the other attributes we see that give good qualities to things: it's only of value because of who painted it and subsequent marketing around that.

Yeah of course he should, I mean, its not like he's been one of the most prominent UK's artist for the last 40 years. His works command millions of pounds, and at one time one of his paintings sold for the most ever paid for a living artists work. Not forgetting that this year one of his paintings sold for over $56 million.

I know art is a personal thing but sometimes the level of ignorance on here is shocking.

I have no idea why some seemingly intelligent people, have so little appreciation and knowledge of art.
even when handed to them on a plate.

Knocking works of art is both pointless and self destructive.

The world of art has a core that puts forward the idea that anyone who cannot see how a certain painting etc. is not worth millions and millions of pounds is because of their ignorance of the subject. It is nothing of the sort and has everything to do with works of "art" being valued at a level that excludes all common sense.
Take, for example, paintings that have been valued (and often sold several times) at astronomical prices then years later are found to be fakes and all of a sudden become worthless. How can that be. If they are so good as to fool "experts" then they are little different from the original.

They are mostly part of the investment racket ...... roulette for the rich

Just think what even £150k could do to help people

If the "painting" is worth £150k .... how much is the "blue box in which it is kept" and "the oil rag" that comes with it worth

so the "painting" has been kept in a "blue box'

there is more "art" in a leaf than in that "thing" ...... I suppose it come with a note from "the Dowagers hand" ...... so we should all bow down to that and praise that we are all so lucky to see that ... we may be allow to read it .. wouldn't that be something

I don't think that is being suggested at all, if anyone doesn't appreciate a piece of art or don't think it is worth more than the canvas and paint then that is absolutely fine. But to suggest just because you don't like it that the painter should be sterilised is ridiculous. Likewise just because it is just a small painting doesn't mean it has to be cheap. It is worth what ever anyone is willing to pay to have it....

Of-course £150K can be spend on many other things...Heck the £5 in my pocket could also be spend on helping people....Not sure I get the point? Who is to say the new owner doesn't spend £1.5M on helping people? Or maybe nothing and just a really nasty person....What is it to you anyway? Do we all need to check with @BillN_33 before we spend our money?

Bit of a frustrated rant for a Sunday night, accusing me of being short, (presumably you mean vertically challenged), and what's all this about me being someone who decides how people spend their money, where did you get that from ....... I never suggested the "painting" should not be bought by anyone who has the money.

Neither are relevant or true if you knew me and my background ................ I am normal height, 5' 11' who could lose a few pounds and who chose to spend his £150k on motor bikes and fast(ish) cars rather than "art" .. although I considered my 911 and R90S to be more "art" than 3 or 4 eggs on a plate

and I am not sure what "god" has to do with this

you sound quite frustrated with something ......... I can recommend a reasonably priced `Red if that will help

Never heard of him. I had to google him and after looking at the google images, presuming they are his work, that egg painting must have been one of his best. The portrait of the Queen (assuming he painted it) looks like he used the Spitting Image puppet as a model.

Money does not make good art.
however money often competes for the ownersip of good art and drives the price up.
Popular art rarely achieves high value. Which is somewhat counter intuitive.
Much like photography... shots that create the most likes on the popular web sites, rarely show much artistic value.

Read my original post

I asked

what do you see?

gives you an opportunity to come out with your considered opinion rather than abuse ...... much more constructive

as you indicate you must be really "short"

I did give a considered opinion....Twice before the drivel came out, and that is what I responded too...I thought that was quite obvious what I responded to as I even quoted it in context, not the original post as you can look up and see for yourself....
