Animal parenting aawww moments

Some lovely shots there. I really want to see baby bears next year.

Not sure any zoos have breeding pairs do the Neil, I know the whipsnade ones are sisters

I don't think there are Ingrid. Hopefully i'll get my act together, venture into Europe and find some ;)
 
The highland wildlife park near kingguisse has a breeding program on the cards- but their male isnt yet sexually mature. That aside the closest one is probably Rhenen in Holland (where the HWP male came from).

Personally i'd rather go to svarlbard to see them in the wild as polar bears don't generally do well in captivity

Yeah, i've read that too.

I'll make do with the aaaaawwwwwwwwww photos for now :D
 
mind you if you just want baby bears I think the female brown bear at Dartmoor zoo is up the duff

I didn't think they'd be breeding at Dartmoor for one reason or another; one of them is a Syrian bear, but maybe that makes no difference.
EDIT: Fudge is way past it.
EDIT: Hayley being the other one's name, kinda quashes any breeding plans completely :D

I think Chester might have plans for little Spectacled bears in the future come to think of it.

My mistake - I get the DWP newsletter but i'd misread , it says they have plans to enter the Brown bear breeding program by acquiring a new breeding male.... sigh

Google however tells us that you are right the chester spectacled bears are hoped to breed in the coming year (Dudley are also hoping to breed thie asiatic black bears)
 
I've only been Dudley three times recently and only seen one bear on each visit ... always looked exhausted to me and I assumed they only had the one, although that may not be the case. I was thinking that it's hard enclosure would be unsuitable for breeding, but rumour has it, bears will be returning to a refurbished area, so who knows.

"Kingussie", Pete! :D

AFAIK, the HWP's female bear (Mercedes) was euthanised in 2011. They have two males now, both around 6 - 7 years old, so I suppose any breeding programme will have to involve borrowing a female or artificial insemination.

No, not exactly. I was thinking more along the lines of semen donation to impregnate a female at another location, instead of having to move her to the HWP, with the risk of her rejecting the male..which of course you knew perfectly well :p
