Ok you’ve all heard of Andy Rouse right ? Big time wildlife tog. (http://www.andyrouse.co.uk/) and he does all the reviews etc on the warehouse express site. Some of you will have seen him at Focus the other week. Anyway I went to a talk he gave last week in Middlesbrough – he stopped off whilst on route to another shoot in Scotland. The talk was sold out (about 250 people at £7 a head) and I’ll say here and now if you get a chance to see his work then take it – his images are simply stunning. I’m sure when you see his pictures you will recognise at lot of them because so much of it published and used in advertising and magazines etc. Although he’s well known for his big game stuff he had just returned from the Falklands so the main part of his show concentrated on penguins and icebergs. He also showed an amazing set of Kingfisher shots taken in a hide near a nest site. Apparently he took 1200 shots to get 32 worth showing – they’re just so fast when diving for fish!
As a public speaker he is very lively, has a slightly blue sense of humour and generally kept the audience entertained for a couple of hours. He was also very approachable and I had a chance to chat with him about some of his techniques and workflow. All in all a sound bloke and a good evening.

As way of a contrast I went to a talk last night, at a local photo club, of a visiting photographer who had a string of letters after his name including FRPS so I was expecting something good. What a disappointment. Now I know photography is subjective and it’s all in the eye of the beholder etc but apart from a handful of shots most of the shots this guy showed wouldn’t have made it as far as my printer and certainly wouldn’t have been seen in public. I’m not just talking poor composition and framing but also bland views and holiday snaps ! Some of the shots were taken in India and Cuba and you can’t fail to get some good images there but a lot were just plain awful. Perhaps no-one has ever told him. Whatever rocks your boat though I suppose. Glad it only cost me £1.:D

I went to see Eamon McCabe at the Lowry in Salford last week. Tickets were a fiver and he was absolutely brilliant at public speaking.

If you get the chance to see him, go - well worth it.

I have to admit I have a great deal of respect for Andy

I have been to a couple of his talsk and also on one of his 'Raptor experience' days at Batsford Arboretum. He has a wicked sense of humour but in one day I learned shed loads of useful techniques.

Top bloke!

I have a helluva lot of respect for his work, but you gotta admit he is probably the biggest commercial "whore" in the business :p

Dont knock it, it makes him a lot of money ! ;) and just sitting there hoping people will book you to do stuff will never make you a fortune, or a household name ! In a commercial world where there are a lot of people after the same money you are, then commercial whorism is the only way to survive ! :)

Agreed... Its all about marketing yourself and branding your style of work. Good luck to the guy I say, if he can get paid for doing this and get some free kit to try and out and put his name to then why not. Just my little old humble opinion.

Wish I had known he was doing a talk in Middlesborough. Just down the road from me. ;)

He's still a way off Colin Prior, not for want of trying mind.

He is a huge talent and his fame status is well deserved.
