I was with my wife in PC World when she bought herself a new Android tablet. The salesman asked her if she had security for it,which she declined. I know it's their job to flog you all sorts of useless additions, but it got me thinking, are Android devices prone to viruses, malware, etc? Should we have some sort of security in place?

i just run avast on mine, free version from the play store

android is no more prone than any other device really as long as you only download from the play store, but as AV is free its a no brainer IMO
 
As above they are just as prone these days as any other device, especially as the play store isn't controlled over content.
Having said that in the 6 years of owning various android devices i have never had any issues.

In most cases common sense should be enough and that comes from me who side loads content to my devices regularly.

My personal opinion and it is just my opinion is that AV on a phone is a waste of time and resource (no matter how minimal).
 
If the tablet will be used for anything critical like internet banking or web shopping or anything else that requires delicate information to be shared through it, it's probably worth using protection of some sort. Otherwise treat the device as an almost disposable item - if it gets terminally infected, bin it and get a new one.

Me too I use the free version of avast
it's never found any malware but it doesn't hurt to be safe
 
I doubt virus or anything like that is the real problem. The problem comes with giving applications rights to your data, the lacks nature with which people allow that, and the unnessary demands many apps make on what access they require.

It is that that I dislike from many phones and especially android and that an app won't run if you don't give it full access to your address book for example. No wonder spam is on its way up.

ah great advice. No, send them all to me, then I can just put a new version of android and enjoy a new toy. Please PM me for address when you are ready to post :)
