Hi Guys,

I have just joined the site so hi to you all. :)

I was wondering if a few of you guys out there could help me with some advice. I have been using a Canon D400 since 2010 and would like to get a second body, something with some more ISO ranges and something that would featureproof me a little. I am going to stick with Canon but have had some contrasting responses on other sites. :bang: So here goes:

Would anyone be able to suggest the best body upgrade for myself - I have been pointed in the direction of the 550D as it has the same processor as the 5D MKII, but this still looks like part of the consumer range to me. I am fairly interested in possibly the 600D or 60D and possibly if the price drops a 7D. All would be possibly body only with a battery grip.

Any advice suggestions please.

Thanks Guys Ollie D

I can heartily recommend the 550D as thats what I'm using at the moment. However, it wouldn't be a massive upgrade for you. I've not used a 60D or a 600D but from what I've seen the 60D is a very good camera and not too expensive as an upgrade. I have had a 7D however and are very good once you get to know it. The 550D and the 5DMkII might have the same processor but that's about as close as it gets. The 5D2 is fantastic, great IQ and a reasonable AF system. I've just sold my 5D2 and my 7D to finance a new 5D MkIII but I'm inclined to think you wouldn't want to go that far just yet.

The processor and sensor an very different things. The processor just takes the data and makes the image out of all the gubbins. The sensor captures the data in the first place and on the 5DMk11 this is a full frame sensor. The 550d is a 1.3 crop.

That's what I said :-p

Just typed it wrong!

Hi Oliver,

I fear I'm not going to help your descision much but here goes: I've recently upgraded from the 400 to a 60D and although I love the 60D I ofen think I'd have been better off investing in some L glass rather than the 60D.

The things I really like about the 60D are auto ISO, the flip out screen (although most of the time I have turned round and just use the display ontop of the camera) and the better low light performance.

But to be honest owning the 60D has just proved what a great little camera the 400D is (which I still use a fair bit).

I often think it's better to buy the best at the price you're willing to pay rather than to get fixated with badges. If the L lens is the best, fine... if not... buy what is.
