Going to Amsterdam with a few friends and wondering if I will be OK with just a 50mm 1.8 lens. I'm going to be taking a few people shots and also pics around the Xmas markets etc.

Do you think I will be too restricted with just the 50mm? I'm on Crop Sensor too so thinking it may be too long?

I've got an 18-200 mm lens but was thinking of something smaller in size and the 18-200 isnt the sharpest.

Thoughts?

Cheers

I feel 50mm may be a bit too long. Something like a kit zoom might be a good compromise, although sometimes just having a single prime lens can force one to create images you'd otherwise have missed.

I would agree, there would be many occasions where only having the 50 would be a problem. For what it weighs, surely the kit and the 50 (if you really feel the need for the 50) would be the best answer.

Thanks guys, I think I'll stick the kit on. The 18-200 is a great allrounder but just a bit bulky and weighs a fair bit too!

Just wanted something nice and light.

Cheers

If you want to go prime only with a crop for a trip like this I'd want something around 30mm.

Definitely. I went all over China with just a 35mm lens (x100) and never felt limited, got so many good shots too. Could have done with a super wide for the landscapes but the pano function did alright. Probably not that much landscape photo opportunities in Amsterdam though...
