Hi all,

Today i've been e-mailed by the Wall Street Journal who want a License to Print one of my aviation photos.

I've never been asked by such a large client before and as such have no idea how much to offer the license for?

Any ideas and suggestion would be welcome
The email from WSJ is marked Urgent so swift replies would be most welcome

Kind regards

Steve

Is it for a single run? Magazine? What page?

I don't know enough to tell you but this info will help

They haven't said anything about how they want to use it

The email basically says "
Hello-
We are interested in using this photo in The Wall Street Journal. Please let me know what procedures to follow to license it for print use.

Thank you"

Should I maybe say Yes and then ask them to describe how they are planning on using the photo and to make me an offer?

Steve

Say yes, the procedure is to describe useage plans, you will then furnish them with pricing information relating to said use.
Upon accaptance of pricing, payment terms and invoicing, large size file will be emailed.

Try $1050.00 and see how you go?

As an example, to license a Flickr image from Getty for publication just in the USA, 1/2 a page for a week would cost around £200.

That would assume print only and only running once.

I've e-mailed them back asking the following

- What size / percentage of page will the photo be printed at in the publication?
- Will the photo be printed once or will you want to hold it on file to use again in the future?
- Will you require the original RAW file or a cropped/sized copy to fit? if so what size?
- What is the standard rate you would pay for a similar size photo?

and this is the photo they want to use

Very interesting. I wonder who was onboard?

They have replied and said

less that 1/4 page
one-time non-exclusive rights
Large JPG is fine
This photo will be used in the Greater New York section of paper which has a smaller print run than the rest of the paper. We are budgeted at $150 USD.

$150 is more than i was expecting to be honest i wasn't expecting and offer much more the $50 so i'm quite happy with it. so i've taken them up.

If they have wanted to keep it on file for use again and again or wanted to printed 1/2 page or larger i'd have been looking more towards the $350-500 range.

thanks for your replies guys

Steve

How did the WSJ find out about your photo. Did you upload it somewhere and they saw it and contacted you? Excellent news for you though :)

Well done

Great news!

(Could have done with a fraction more space in front of the nose for the aircraft to be flying into, and less reflection on the registration on the top engine to make it perfect but hey, a sales a sale :p i{In cheek}).

I've only got the image uploaded on my Flickr account and linked to one of my plane spotting pages on stevipedia.co.uk http://www.stevipedia.co.uk/Spotting/Falcon900.html

so i can only assume they wanted a specific photo of this specific aircraft and found it on flickr or my website while googling?

Steve

After doing a bit of Googling, I think it is more to do with the owner of the aircraft.

I've only got the image uploaded on my Flickr

Now how many time have we read on this very forum that flickr is a waste of time, and it's just for an ego trip of lots of people say what a nice shot you have taken :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Get them so send you a couple of hard copies of the edition as well, so that you have a tearsheet!

Congrats! :)

I've found out it's operated on behalf of Michael Bloomberg the NYC Mayor.

thanks for all your input today guys

Kind regards

Steve
