American Football - Tips

I found it to be one of the hardest sports to photogrpah.. Its mainly a load of blokes in padded gear talking to each other in a huddle.. wiht bits of action inbetween..

Dont bother trying to follow the ball.. the whole idea is to fool people into thinking you ahve it when yer team mate has it.. fools the camera man as well..

Most field ball sports you pick a spot and stay there... a golden rule is never chase the action.. But with American football you can wander along to where the action is while there all yaping ..

Its a long day..........

this was my last attampt and I stayed in one spot.. didnt follow the game.

Its a long day..........

can say that again... production company I do a lot of work for got hired to film the whole season of a university team... waaaaay too many mornings and hanging around in the cold filming the only game that can make 60 minutes last 5 hours...

as KIPAX said, the entire aim of the game is to confuse the other team and pretend that you've got the ball... making it a bitch of a game to film or shoot :( plus side you can wander up and down the sides as the game goes on, because they have a small mother's meeting between each 10second play...

A lot of american football seems to be the hype around it, just as much as the game itself... so the cheerleaders, the touchdown celebrations (though sadly restricted in the UK league, they can get points taken off if they celebrate too much - annoyingly for me, as it's those bits that make great video...), coach reactions etc.

I usually start with the 70-200, but then put on a 1.4 convertor. It's mostly out of laziness, I don't have to move so often to keep the action in range. With the 300 you'll can spend more time behind the goal having the action coming towards (or away) from you, but I think i'd prefer to be using a zoom. When the pass is thrown, you've a chance of zooming out and getting onto the receiver before the ball arrives.

Anyway, the game lasts long enough to try a few different things. I'll be at two games, back to back, on Sunday.

There are some examples of things that work, and probably things that don't, on my website.
