Does anyone have a 3.5mm jack plug taking sound from their Amazon Echo unit / (4th generation) to their amp ? I bought one of these Echo units yesterday as it was reduced, everywhere, from £89.99 to £59.99 which it does every 6 months or so. We have a couple of the Dots but there's a 3" subwoofer in this larger model and two, rather than one .8 tweeters that come with the Dot.

I've pushed a 3.5mm jack plug into the dedicated out socket of the Echo unit and the two RCA jacks, that come with it..bought separately from the Echo unit.. into my amp via the Tuner 'In' socket . Echo now plays through my external speakers for the HiFi but I have to hold the jack plug into the Echo socket or it jumps back a couple of mm... enough to lose the connection. It's feels as though it's hit an internal spring. I've Googled a lot and nowhere does it specify anything other than a normal 3.5mm jack.

Anyone any ideas what the problem might be ?

Hi John

Not a 100 percent certain , but , could it possibly be that you need a ""Mini 3.5 jack plug"" on one end going into RCA ? I suspect the 3.5 plug have may be slightly too long therefore its hitting something internal on the Echo

Possibly something like this >> mini 3.5 to RCA << this is a Stereo jack as it has 2 black rings around the Tip

Also - on the end of the jack that goes into the echo is there "One black ring" OR "Two black rings" ? ? .. sometimes the jacks have only 1 ring around the Tip meaning that its a MONO jack going out to a split RCA which as far as I`m aware , would be slightly shorter in length and therefore would not need to be pushed as far into the Echo ..

Not sure on all of this John to be honest , I`m just trying to remember back to the days when I was connecting all sorts of stuff using lots of combinatios of 1/4 " jacks to Stereo > RCA > 3.5 > Phono etc etc .. Sorry I cannot be more definite ..

Thanks for responding, Harry.Much appreciated.

Here's what I have .As you see the two black ringed jacks so stereo. If it should be a mini-3.5mm then that should have been mentioned in the several Youtube information clips I got up.

I can change it for a mini as I keep receipts and boxes for a while and I've only just bought it.

The mini ?? https://www.amazon.co.uk/3-5mm-Stereo-Mini-Phono-Cable/dp/B01CIDLPSM?th=1

Is this a mini ,too ? It's described as a 'short' 3.5mm jack..Also stereo,I see. Maybe it's the same as the one above but is described here as 'short' rather than 'mini'

Forgot to 'quote' to give you an alert and can't insert it after posting, it seems.

i do this to feed an amazon dot to a pair of active speakers in the kitchen.
they are standard 3.5mm stereo jacks maybe your cable or jack is a bit off
some cheap cables can do this only takes a mm for it to not quite fit

Could be a faulty socket on the echo.
Can you try the cable on something else?

Hi JohnC6

I am not completely certain about the ""short 3.5 mini jack"" however it doesn`t look like its much different from the original one that you have ..

Would it be possible to take the Echo with you to a local store and maybe they would let you check which cable would be suitable . Somewhere like Maplins or a Currys PC Store etc ..

10/10 Bob. :) It's the last thing I thought it could be. I took it back and was given a new one after the assistant checked that my 3.5mm jack (I took it with me) went in ok. He said the thin piece of metal just inside was in the wrong place and showed me with another Echo where it should be. He said he was surprised and hadn't seen that fault before. It's all up and running playing through the speakers.

Thanks to all who contributed. (y)

As you see,Harry..I did just that .I hadn't logged on today until now so hadn't seen your suggestion until now and thought I'd try the shop this afternoon but wait for the outcome before posting. Appreciate your input....No pun intended :D

Pleased it is all sorted. If quality control was up to standard it shouldn’t have happened. Perhaps I should test my echoes with jacks just in case I should ever need to use one.

Do you notice any difference in sound quality between the echo and the dot when connected to your high fi?

Regards
