Went down to the meadows near my house today, I'm a very regular visitor and kind of know what to expect. Anyways, it was deadly silent, all but a couple of pigeons and a few gulls. :( Usually little egrets, grey herons, kestrals, tits, sparrows, robins, kingfishers etc... but deadly silent?

Am I totally missing something?
 
Strange you should say that - I was out walking on Sunday and found it very quiet as well. I know that many greenfinches seem to have died because of this bird virus going around and I have also seen some ill looking sparrows in my garden. I wonder just how many birds have died because of it?

There has always been kestrals, but the meadows is quite big, but the birds have always been creatures of habit, i.e I've always known where to look for the heron, for example, or the coal/blue/great/ tits etc.
 
Maybe it's because Winter is on the way and they've all migrated to warmer climes? :D

But then again I'm only a tomato picker, not an ornithologist.

I was thinking the same recently. Garden normally full of sparrows and blue tits but not a sausage during the last 2 or 3 wks. Anway this morning I saw the biggest variety I have ever seen in the two minutes I had before leaving for work... robin, starling, magpie, sparrow, bullfinch, coal tit, another coal tit type but with a longer tail, blue tit.

Maybe they've been on a little holiday!!:LOL:
 
The majority of birds have been moulting into their winter coats, which makes them more vulnerable to predation, so they will have been keeping a low profile. They should soon be back to their usual noisy selves very soon.

At this time of year no singing is reqd. as breeding is mostly over. Most birds communicate by calls which are more muted and harder to hear. As stated a predator might have passed.

Also birds are usually feeding heavily at this time before moving on via migration or needing to survirve our winters, so are concentrationg on grabbing a meal rather than chinwagging with their pals. Was it a cloudy or cool day as this also keeps the birds quite.

Welcome to the world of willdife photography lol. In general you can just never predict where and when wildlife will be, won't be, might be. Vert frustrating...but highly rewarding when it all comes together :D
