Am I missing something here

I did a studio shoot on Sunday and I've just downloaded all the RAW files and they look really dark. Am I missing something, do I have to do something with them first?

The jpegs I took as test shots to check I had my settings etc right have come out fine.

I have about 70 that I am pleased with in terms of pose, composition etc and they are now in a folder ready to be worked on but before I do, is there a way of getting them all looking brighter in a batch edit way for RAW or something?

I haven't used it in ages, but I thought that RAWshooter could batch process, give it a guick google if you haven't got it.

What software are you using, most will batch ajust, I'm courious why the jpeg look so different exposure wise, they should look similar-ish (the raw converter applies a default conversion for viewing) Wayne

I think one way you can get round it is use adobe DNG to batch conver .CR2's to DNG, then the DNG's should be ok in RAWshooter. I know it's another step, but you can batch convert to DNG

Can you post some of the photos, then we can the .exif and see what's going on.

Oops - am copying some files across to my hard drive and it's slowing my laptop down so didn't see your replies...

Wayne - I'm using the Canon Digital photo software then I was going to process in Elements. I'm new to shooting in RAW and they looked perfect in camera, just too dark now

Andrew - how would I know if I have? And will unistall Rawshooter then

They should be the same, or near enough, the raw is under exposed.
Unfortunately a lot of the exif is missing from your raw shot, the jpg has complete exif.
Without the raw exif, its difficult to rule out....user error


actually, the orange on his shoulder looks a bit blown, yet the photo is under exposed....might not be user error, could be a software thing

That's odd then, I have saved them both from DPP. When Richard and I were looking at them on Sunday, they looked fine. It could well be user error as I've not shot in RAW before and not quite up to scratch on shooting manual I suppose.

What do you need from the exif? I'll try again

Hmmm, I think it could be me being stupid then. I went through them in Picasa first to select the ones I wanted to keep and then exported them. I think doing this made them go dark as this is the one straight from DPP

I hate all that import export rubbish, I just move the files from the card to a folder and then open them individually with edit software.
I see the import export being useful for batch edit of a big pile of files, but apart from that its just extra faff for nothing.
I never understood why peeps need software just to get their pics from card/camera to pc.
Maybe Picasa is doing something to them on export :shrug:

sort out the colour cast - but of cropping and you've got a good shot!

Canon ( and Nikon as well) allow you to select picture styles for the fial image. This "Style" is then used to create the camera jpeg. Now most independent RAW converters don't read the picture style information which is usually embedded with the RAW file ( Lightroom is the exception). DPP does read picture styles and applies them to the converted RAW images. I suspect what you are seeing in Picasa is the RAW file without picture styles being applied.

Picassa always shows Canon RAW files rather underexposed - dunno why. The muted tones are due to the picture style being ignored by Picassa.

Andrew, I'm sorry But thanks for your comments, you do know now that I'm going to use that expression more. I thought I was missing something in the thought process, wouldn't know how to phrase it differently
