Yes
Obviously the xps looks nicer but comparing them the specs look the same? They both have a 3840 x 2160 screen, same 512gb ssd, 8th gen i7 and 16gb ram... but £800 difference, the graphics card is different but its for Microsoft office and photoshop/lightroom, so am i right in thinking the inspiron will manage just the same?

From those specs alone they are different CPUs - the XPS has a 6 core 12 thread coffee lake chip compared to the inspirons 4 core 8 thread kaby lake chip.
I will bet that the inspiron will not be an M.2 PCIE drive but a simple Sata SSD

Yeah exactly. You’re paying for those minor things. Also check the dell UK outlet site too as they tend to have some strong prices and have same warranty as normal.

Yup.

The more expensive laptop has an Intel 8750H which has six cores although they only operate at a measly 2.2ghz, with the promise when conditions are right that one or more cores may spin up to 4.1ghz.

Whilst some (me) would say this processer would struggle to pull the skin of a rice pudding it’s far superior to your cheaper laptop which has only 4 cores running at a dizzying 1.8ghz with the (faint) promise of 4ghz if the stars are aligned correctly. They also appear to have different quality 4K screens.

Before I’m flamed I am being slightly harsh/sarcastic here reference the laptop processors but as with all laptops and any Apple Mac heat will reduce performance.

The 8750H will turbo all cores at 3.2ghz
The 8550U will turbo all cores at 2.4ghz

Disappointing isnt it when they advertise a headline figure of over 4!

Pretty much!
It's all fine and well saying turbo of 4.1ghz but most people with little knowledge will assume that to be the whole CPU speed not just one core within. A 4.1ghz on one core is fine for single core applications however the majority of software today utilises multiple cores.

I would prefer to see the headline figure for all cores to be honest

Clock speeds are only relevant comparing processors of the same generation. With each generation the number of clock cycles required for each processor instruction tends to fall on average so they can do more at the same clock speed. Keeping the clock speed lower also keeps the power consumption down, which is important in a device that uses batteries, means less cooling is needed and so on.
