alternative to flickr?

Well 500px had a massive data breach I'm still getting warnings related to the email I used there briefly - so they wouldn't be my choice.
You don't need to have anything to do with dodgy people or pictures on flickr unless you 'socialise' with them.
I'm actually quite pleased that they don't have prudish censorship rules, just voluntary levels of restriction.

It all depends upon what you want to publish your pictures for. FLICKR is a very big platform and will get a lot of visits especially if the owner is a good photographer. A smaller site will not have the same, for the want of a better phrase 'footfall'
Flickr and I imagine any hosting site will have it's own share of photographers who wish to publish 'alternative material' so you may find that in the future sooner or later, your new site will have the same or similar material posted.
They do attempt to moderate what is posted, but it is not left to humans who will naturally take the wider view, it a an algorithm that does the donkey work over a narrower viewpoint and that is enough to satisfy the legal protocols, but not the more discerning visitor.

So is it a case of out of the frying pan etc.

I've been with flickr for a long time and not had any problems, it is still about the best there is for sharing to sites like this

I have a Flickr account as well but it is empty at present, I am about to upload a new stock list when I can find the time!!!!

Some of the images on there are very definitely more suitable for the 'dark web' but just ignore them. With the lack of the oxygen of publicity they will fade away

I always found 500px to have a decent interface and some high quality images to browse, but the community aspect to be poor. Lots of like/follow-me-back comments in place of actually developing organic social circles.

i guess i really just want somewhere to host my images do i can link back to them and get some feedback on them. Also i like looking at other street photographers and landscapers for ideas and locations.

As I said, Flickr is a massive site so if you want feed back on your work, that is possibly not the best place to be. The number of images hosted on Flickr number in the millions and getting someone to comment on your work is probably as rare as hens teeth. You will get far better feedback on this site or another one I use called Digital Monochrome Photography. It is exactly as it says and only host B&W images from digital or scanned negatives/slides that are converted into B&W. The two owners of the site also contribute and are very helpful.
Look at Black and White Photography Learning Forum (digitalmonochromeforum.co.uk)

I didnt realise i have a portfolio included in my adobe subscription so i think i will just use that and share any images i would like some critique for on the forum, it seems the way forward tbh :) thanks for the advice :ty:
Adobe Portfolio is more akin to a personal website than Flickr. My website is made and ran off Adobe Porfolio.

www.RobCain.photography

Just a word of warning don’t expect it to be searchable by google without a personal domain address. I’ve been using it as a replacement for a zenfolio website I previously had. I find it’s a good replacement for the zenfolio website. I was able to pretty much create it. I need to do a bit of updating as I’ve neglected this year.

Yeah I was thinking i should be able to share photos on here and link to them from my website instead of flickr, your website looks great by the way o_O (y)

I have used flickr for number of years and rarely see anything dubious ,its the perfect place to display your work ,just remember that the tags you input lead to searches .so if for instance you tag your photos with stuff like" blue tits" you will normally see photos of birds but some others might slip through the search ,but if you search "big tits" you might see photos of one of my ex's

Like you Jeff, I've never stumbled across anything unsavory.
Curiously though my most viewed image is one that I labeled Armoured dildo,
it is of course armadillo and I tagged it like above just for a laugh.
I still wonder what the hell people were searching for in the first place though, to find it :D

As far as I’m aware that isn’t possible. Portfolio puts multiple photos on one web address so you can’t pick out a single photo.

One of the benefits of Flickr is you can post images to here using the BB code. Whilst you could use a free account and delete the older stuff sadly that means images posted in older threads will just disappear.

yeah one of my most viewed pics is some starlings fighting over a bird feeder ,titled " the welsh swingers association" for a laugh .. it certainly gets the views though 44,098 to be precise ,theres something stirring in the green green grass of home by the look of that

If you already have your own website with your own web space/hosting, why not just use FTP and upload any pics and link them that way? It's easy to do and will cost you nothing.

I'm still very much a beginner photographer and had mostly been using flickr to look for ideas for locations and compositions for street photography, also i like to look at photos tagged with 77D and my lenses to see if i'm falling short or my gear when my photographs don't work out the way i intended (almost always me falling short and not my gear :banghead: lol) i'm certainly not a prude by any means, the boudoir/glamour photography on this forum is almost always a much higher standard than i could dream of making but in the street photography/candid sections (which is one of my favourite genres) there seems to be a volume of photographers that have entire portfolios of young women's butts etc and it just feels a bit creepy to me?
Anyhow i dont think i really need it so i think i'll just stick to the adobe PF and here :snaphappy:
