Hi all.

Is there an alternative to Flickr that is free?

The aspects i like from Flickr are the Exif. data and also that you can message members, however, that seems limited to 10 messages, which isnt a lot!

I do like the fact you can also search for images which are by specific camera, gives a bit of inspiration for people who are fairly new to photography, like i am, and what can possibly be achieved with the camera you have.

Many thanks all.

Pix.ie isn't bad - I really don't like photobucket. Carp image quality I found...

There's a couple of suggestions in my thread I started last night....as i'm sick of Flickr over sharpening my images when I upload them.

As others have said, Photobucket image quality isn't the best, but if you look at my examples in my thread below, Flickr ain't all that either....

I joined Flickr and became a full member.
Seems to be the best option for me.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions everyone!

Can you view exif. data on those sites?

another vote for Smugmug.

I opted for smugmug over Flickr as you can set up password protected galleries and hide them from google searches too, which for me works great for family photos. Though you may be able to do this on Flickr now, it wasn't mentioned on their list of reasons to upgrade to the pro account when I was looking to change a few years ago.

Their customer service is pretty good too, e-mail queries have always been answered within a few hours.

I gave up on flickr as they reprocess images and add sharpening (yuk!). I tried smugmug, but the interface did not seem fully customisable. I'm now with pbase which I like as I have complete control of the css and the image I upload is the exact bit-for-bit file that actually gets displayed.

Zenfolio is another one. They have introduced quite a bit of customisation so you have quite a few options on how your gallery looks. Exif is viewable and you can password protect individual galleries or photos.

I have just checked the file size of the original photo on my hard drive and the original uploaded file's size on flickr and they are identical. This means that no processing could have happened during the uploading to flickr. The smaller sizes of the photo obviously do have to be processed by flickr and some sharpening does appear to be applied, but, as far as I can see, the original file is untouched.

Flickr store the original photo and supply a link, but the default size displayed is 640 pixels. Pbase display an 800 pixel image by default and the original file is displayed by default as long as the original image is 800 pixels or less.

I've just started with Redbubble, i only use photobucket to link photo's to here after resizing.

Thanks a lot.

Everyone on the forum is so helpful, it's a great place!

Picasa is mahhhvellous! Yep, has exif data on.

I use photobucket for some things - but to tbh - the quality is appallingly crahp on uploads I've done. Useful for quick videos straight off the card tho.

When you guys talk about the IQ on Photobucket are you just talking about viewing them on Photobucket? I use it just the link to other sites such as TP and the linked image seems fine and also retains the EXIF.

I dont have a problem with Photobucket either Roy, Exif always there too. I did the experiment above to see . . . although I have seen some real poor images from others off PB compared with Flikr, some off Flikr can be dodgy?

The examples above do have a 'slight difference'? . . . but could someone explain the good and bad points please?

I have my own website and cannot see any difference whatsoever between a image on my web site and the same image in Photobucket that is linked to a site like TP.
The only time I do see differences is when viewing my images on my local PC windows (XP) via something like windows picture viewer - there is always a reddish hue to them. In colour managed applications like Photoshop and DPP they look exactly the same as a linked Photobucket image and my own website.

Thanks Roy . . . I thought it was me, I cant see enough of a difference in the two pics I have posted here to get excited about, in fact, I think the PB pic has better shadow detail:shrug: I have never been unhappy with my PB pics. However, I have seen some really poor examples from other people using PB . . . what are they doing???

I'm not sure either, trying Picasa and Flickr atm, not tried PB. Anyone else tried Picasa?

I use Pbase. You have to pay a small amount, but it's amazing how many pictures you can have on there for the smallest money, especially if you stick to 800x600. Excellent site, retains all exif etc.

Should point out it isn't free, but its only about $15 dollars a year though and as said you get a great fully customisable personal web page for that.

Have a look, if your interested Ill give you a code to get an introductory discount.

Good photo's by the way.

I need to start a fitness regimen . . . advise from the Doc., :rules: !!! So I sat and thought . . . the idea of a gym horrifies me, all that sweat, and grunting people, I'm not a people person although am trying to improve??? Swimming? I can? . . . could swim like a fish, but that was 40 od year ago when I had a decent looking body and was very fit, almost 6ft tall with a 32" waist and 48" chest!

Then, on another site, brain storming on another issue . . . one thing lead to the other . . . what about a bicycle??? I mean one with wheels . . . I used to ride many many miles a week, from 5 years old to when I got my first car at 17 . . . I've just worked it out, I did a minimum of 100 miles per week, every week, as a teenager! School, morning and evening paper rounds, thats with out the social trips to the swimming pool, the river to fish, visiting friends and clubs etc.

I'm thinking, a reasonable 'hybrid bicycle' costs £300-£350, dont take long for gym fees to eat that up! I can cycle to various destination, with camera, stopping on rout for pictures, pictures at the destination, or a round trip with picture type mini travelogue in mind? A new take on the 52 or 365 idea?

I loose some weight and get fit, the picture taking gives the cycle session a reason/goal, over and above 'frustrating diets to loose weight' . . .

As I'm still a fisherman, I can go on some of my fish jaunts by bicycle, making some, 'off the beaten track venues' far more accessible, and of course the camera can come there too;)

Anyone else do this . . . if so, does it have a name? . . . if not, any suggestions for a 'goal type name'?
