Alternative to Canon 7d?

I'm thinking about buying Canon 7d, but I was wondering if there was a better/about the same camera for the same price range, or cheaper? I want a "fast" camera that takes at least 4.5 frames/s and with a good stabilisator? I can pay up to about 140£, but I don't mind paying less!
 
Hi Maiken and welcome to TP! You don't mention if you have any lenses as this would be a big factor in recommending other cameras. You also mention a price of 140£, but the 7D without a lens is over £1200, so maybe you could give us some more detail?

HI Maiken welcome to the forum.
Maybe the 60D is good for you.
 
Also note that in the Canon the stabilisation is in the lens. Maybe one of the Sony SLT's would be good for you if you have no Canon lenses.
 
I agree with Richie - I would go for the 60D, in fact I downgraded from the 7D because for me it is better, although I'm curious about the 140£ part too because even the 60D is £797 or so for just the body.

Hi Maiken - welcome to the forum. :thumbs:

You might check out a Pentax K5, especially if you like a physically smaller camera. It has in-body image stabilisation and very good weather-proofing.

I'm only 15, but despite my young age I have already gained quite alot of experience with cameras, and also sold a few photos. I currently own a nikon D80, but I think this I to "slow" and work bad in bad ligthing.
 
If you've already got an investment in Nikon lenses, consider the D7000. Better low light performance than the D80 (or D90) and you'll be familiar with the handling. Also much less than £1400.
 
Wow wish I had £1400 to spend when I was 15! Kids these days sssshhh..anyway as the poster above stated I would think a d7000 would be your best bet as your ready familiar with nikons, plus it's a fair bit cheaper than a 7d!
 
I have already tried Nikon, but i want another type now, and Canon seems like it fits me better.
 
What problems did you have with Nikon and which one were you looking at?
 
Maiken, if you can hang on until around 23rd/24th August, Sony (and Nikon) has some big announcements on new products. The cameras themselves won't be released til early October though.

Sony will announce their 'A77' and 'A65'. The A77 is supposed to do 12fps and it of course has the SSS (Super Steady Shot) in the body.
 
Have you ever considered Olympus? Not very popular but very nice. The E3 and E30 should fit the bill.

I'm surprised you wouldn't want a Nikon D7000 though.

that sounds a bit odd - if you already have an investment in nikon lenses then sticking with nikon is a no brainer - and just upgrading your camera - the ideal low light camera is probably the D3 but thats out of your price range.

you could however get a D300 or D300s

theres very little that canon do that nikon dont -so it strikes me that swapping between the too is a bit of a waste of time and cash (and this isnt a brand loyalty thing for me - i'm a canon shooter so its almost heresy :lol:)

Yes, the A77 body is rumoured to be around £800. You could always drop down to the A65 which is rumoured to be like the A77 but without the magnesium body, top LCD and slightly less FPS.

As I say, it's just something else to consider.

Problem with sony though is there's not a lot of lenses to choose from.

What I advise Maiken though is to not let others persuade you to buy this or that brand. Just take note of the camera brand and models, go to a shop and try them, play with the menus etc.. and "feel" them........ "let the camera choose you" :D....
 
So many people questioning his decision to buy canon?

For a better alternative to the 7d I would buy a used canon 1dmkIII as Chris says furthur up..

I agree.

I've only pointed out to him that Sony and Nikon have announcements upcoming. It just gives him more options than just Canon. The new Nikon and Sony cameras will have high ISO performance that is way superior to the Canon 7d as well.

really? W:lol:W you said they are to be announced and you are now saying they are better than 7D :lol:? But I guess that might be true as sensor technology keeps on getting better, but its not just the high iso performance that makes someone decide to buy a certain camera.

for me its not so much a question of questioning his decision to buy a canon - i agree a second hand 1Dmk3 would be a serious alternative to a 7D but rather questioning why he is moving away from Nikon just because 'he's tried them and didnt get on with it'

imo if he didnt get on with a nikon dslr theres a good chance of spending 1400 notes on a canon then finding he doesnt get on with that either

instead i'd tend to suggest looking at why he didnt get on with the D80 - if its just a case of wanting better low light performance etc then he'd be better off sticking with nikon and getting a d300s or a d7000

if its a case of it being big and heavy then he'd be better off loking at something smaller like a G series or one of the evils

and if its just a case of thinking a new camera will make him take better photographs then my advice would be to save the money and just practice with the D80 until hes taking the best pictures its capable of.
 
Sir, you have just made a sensible post in a thread which promised a Canon v Nikon flame-fest. For shame!
 
No-one has asked the OP what he intends to use the camera for. For ultimate reach and cropping ability then it has to be the 7D. If ultimate reach isn't his concern then the 1DMK3 makes lot of sense with the wider FOV, and larger pixels for some subjects.

These things used to be pretty clear cut, but the edges are getting a bit blurred now. With 16mp the 1DMK4 is much more of an all rounder with good reach too.

The new 1DS4 when it comes will no doubt have upwards of 30K pixels which will also make it a very useful all rounder, but the 7D successor will no doubt be sporting over 20K pixels by then for ultimate reach if that's the prime consideration. That apart - the 1DS4 will no doubt have a £6K price tag , but would make more sense to me than splurging that amount on a medium format digital back.

No, but the OP did specify he needed something good in bad lighting. Since the Sony A580 arguably had better high ISO performance than the Canon 7d, I'm presuming the A77 will as well.

Don't turn this into a Sony v Canon v Nikon thread. I'm certainly not. I'm just saying it may be wise to hold fire until the Nikon and Sony announcements.

If you read my second reply to the OP, I said go to a shop and try their cameras. I never said try the CANON, or canon is better etc.

You are the one who keeps mentioning camera brands not I :rules:

I wouldn't say that "tried it and didn't get on with it" it's just that i've had Nikon for almost 4 years now, a D40, than a D80, and a want to see what else there is, and not just base on Nikon.
And no, i don't think buying a new camera will make me take better photos at all. I'm satisfied with my photos, but i need a camera with more "speed" stabilisation and that works better in bad light. But it seems like you think i'm just a spoiled boy you'r seriosly wrong on 2 things!
1. I'm in fact a GIRL
2. I pay for all my cameras with my own money, that i've had to worked hard for!
And the next time i'm on my computer, and not my phone, i will post 2 photos so you can see that i can actually take good photographs!

I intend to use the camera for horse photography. Both portraits and competision.

The D80 i what you'd say in norwegian, "slow". And in show jumpingphotgraphy, you need a camera with high speed :)

I can buy a lens outside of the budget, but i would prefer to have it included in the budget.
