I'm in the mood for trying some alternative print processes. Hopefully it might lift my prints from mediocrity.

I bought a book on Lith printing which sounds a nightmare and I didn't really like any of the examples but then I saw some portraits in this months B&W Photography mag which were lith prints and they were jaw dropping.

Where's a good place to start with alternative print processes? I thought about Sepia toning but apparently you need a really well ventilated darkroom because of the bleach and my garage isn't exactly what you'd call well ventilated.

Kev

Most of the later sepia kits were odourless & are used in daylight.

Kev I think FotoSpeed sell complete Lith kits which I believe are not hard to use, but never done it myself.

As Toonie points out lots of toning kits can be used in daylight and I think these days with RC paper.
I believe for better results fibre based papers are the best to use.

Apologies for the delay in response, I went away with work for a bit and had forgotten about this thread.

Didn't know that. Odourless makes it a bit simpler, I'll take a look.

Cheers Nick. The only problem I have with FB papers is the washing. I'm on a meter so too tight to throw water down the drain. RC is better like that. I might install a water butt in my garden now and use rain water to rinse my prints, now there's an idea.

Nooooo for sepia. Just cover them in coffee and leave 'em out in the sun. Definitely get your act together on Lith :) or look at Dye Transfer printing.... :D

What is this dye transfer printing you speak of?

alternative processes....

I sooooo want to do Tintypes...:D

Eventually got the video to play and tin types look too cool for school. Shame it means investing in more camera gear rather than printing gear though. Would be nice to achieve a similar effect with paper.

Caffenol (C) prints?

A sphincter says what?

You can mix your own developer with coffee, washing soda and an optional sharpness/speed boost of vitamin C. It stinks, but I like the results. I've only done it on RC paper but I bet FB would be even better.
