ALS Ice bucket challenge

Yeah...'cause silent donation raises awareness every day :sleep::sleep:

ALS to me is Anti Lag System....why do Americans have to call conditions another name when there is perfectly good one already??

to be fair ALS is the scientific name - Motor nuerone disease is the laymans name (although in america its called Lou Gherigs disease , after the famous ball player who got it)

For me the basic issue with this is that dunking your head in an ice bucket is about as similar to suffering from ALS/MND as taking a no make up selfie is to suffering from cancer , so while the raising money thing is good, the idea that its an experience like sufering from ALS is a tad insulting to those who actually live with it day in day out.

( I went out with a girl who worked for the MND association or society or whaever its called for a while, and I remember a sufferer i met in that time frame telling me that having MND was like being totally p***ed off your trolley lack of coordination, control over bodily functions, speech etc, only with some added pain thrown in and with none of the good stuff . May be we should have a " get off your face on special brew then stick needles in your legs every da for a week before donating to charity" challenge - for added realism)

Insulting my arse.

okay you've got a fat arse

joking aside you don't think having a serious medical condition compared to someone sticking their head in a bucket of water in anyway demeans the condition ?

Im waiting for the hot-boiling-water- Boiling oil challenge. Theres quite a few celebs I'd like to see take part in that
That sounds better

You're always in hot water, so would you notice :p
I wasn't aware that I was a celeb. But thanks for thinking of me in that way

How could I think of you in any other way, famous for your infamy ;)

So do you think it would have raised as much money if someone posted on Facebook

"I just donated £10 to [insert charity here] I nominate [insert three people's names here] to do the same"

It would have worked? Sme people don't seem to understand that the greatest way to raise money is to attach the donation to something that gets noticed and spreads like wildfire

You're missing the point. The ALS ice bucket challenge was always about raising awareness.
The donations are a happy by-product.

What beneit is raising awareness of something if the end result isnt raising money to do something about it.

How does people knowing about it but not doing anything help in any way?

The whole point of raising awareness of a condition/disease is to ultimately try an find a cure. To do so requires funds and research. Raising awareness just for the sake of awareness is a fruitless excercise.

Lastly I don't see how I am missing any point. My post was in direct relation to the meme posted about donating to charity and had zero mention about awareness. It was a specific point about charity donation raising.

Seeing as I didn't start the campaign.....you might be better off asking those who did tbh.

It would seem so since it went completely over your head. But you live and learn I suppose :)

Ok. Well I'm sure I'll lose sleep over that.
Oh wait. .....nope.

Talking of losing sleep. I was reading about ALS and sleep disturbance being one of the many many factors that makes life so hard for those who have it.

Well there is one company, which was on BBC News yesterday, which wasn't impressed. They fired an employee for doing it in works time and mis-using a piece of company equipment.

Was this a "real" termination of employment? Or the spoof firing live on TV of a US news presenter for carrying out his challenge live on air?

It was a guy who worked for a firm, I think might have been in Leeds. It was on TV, but I can't find it on the BBC News website. I might be being unfair, but I suspect he had "previous" and this may have provided an excuse.

The no make up selfie didn't originate as a cancer awareness campaign, it started off with one celebrity supporting another on Twitter after the latter was slated in the media for daring to go out bare faced looking her age, however it raised a million pounds for british cancer charities in 24 hours, maybe it's peer pressure, maybe some people feel the need to perform in front of a camera or maybe people can just identify with seeing their friends and peers doing something a bit different but stupid or not, they work
