Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if there is any truth in what i've been told? I have been told that if i do not have my receipts for my camera gear with me when i go to marrocco,i will have difficulty getting it back into this country.

Can't answer that specifically but at the same time I would guess it was untrue because I can't think of any reason why it should be true:thinking:

I can't think that it would be true either the same could be said for laptops mobile phones even your "Levi's" or "bench" etc

Even if it is true. If the stuff is not boxed and hanging around your neck how do they know you didnt take it with you (just post the box home)

I think that if you are bringing back nice new shiny stuff and you get stopped at customs then they may question whether you had been on a shopping spree while on holiday.

I think they would need to have good cause to sieze any items, which you would be able to get back once you produce the evdence of when you got it from.

I would think the chances of this happening are pretty remote, I have been stopped several times by customs and the usual question is "have you brought any cigerettes back with you?", not "thats a nice camera Sir, where did you buy that".

Thanks for those reasuring words. It was the travel agent who told me this last week. I've been flapping because i can't find the receipt for my camera.

If they won't let my camera back in then it'll cost them a fortune feeding me cos i'm not leaving it behind.

If it comes to it and you want to take a receipt with you, surely it would be easy enough to "forge" borrow one in these days of programmes such as office / lotus / photoshop?

Yep this is quite true.Don't know why i didn't think of that myself. :bonk:

Have to agree with this, also they would spend ages shifting through peoples kit, which given everything else they have to do i would say you would have to be very unlucky.

whatever you do, don't take a forged receipt to show at customs. If they suspect something dodgy then they are able, with most mainstream high-value products, to check the origin of kit via the serial number. And if that information doesn't tally with your 'receipt' then you won't be needing forum access for some time ;)

I am sure Lee knows where he bought the lens? / kit?
The serial numbers are available
I didn't mean a total forgery, just a "duplicate" of the one he lost... but of course I would never do something like this anyway :D

I've carried lots of kit too and from Africa and only been stopped once (going into South Africa). I always carry a preprinted list of all my kit and serial numbers and that seems to be enough

If you're not guilty, you only have to prove that. Committing a crime by falsifying evidence is real cause to stop you! So I wouldn't even try that.
Create real evidence!
You only need to prove you had all that stuff before you left. So take a good set of pictures of it, with today's paper ('s date) well visible, and leave those pix behind. At home. There's your evidence should you need it in the 'worst case scenario'.

Imo you should worry more about 'losing' your gear en route. But not neccessarily the hardware. That's replaceable (insurance!). But I would especially worry about losing the software, my photos! Those are IRreplaceable. No amount of money can get those back.

If you have access to fast internet where you go, you could upload the contents of your full memory cards via Podmailing.com (unlimited file/folder sizes) to your own email address. They would already safely be back home and can't be 'lost' anymore. Or 'impounded' by shifty authorities.

And you could empty and reuse your memory cards too. And again. And again.

When you're back home – with or without your cam – you check your email and download all your photos to your PC.

Tada!

Have a nice holiday!

I take my camera gear in and out of the country regularly. (I fly upwards of 150 times a year and I have my gear with me every time). I bought my latest camera in Dubai last year and took it into the UK without any trouble at all.

I can't recall EVER being questioned about it.

I went to Marrakech 2 weeks ago with another tog friend of mine. We flew with BA. Between us we had 2 bodies, 7 lenses, 2 flashes, 2 pods, Epson P3000, Archos, tons of storage cards and batteries.

No problem what so ever.

I got stopped on the way out of russia but only cause the customs guard was admiring the camera! I offered to take his pic but apparently that can upset officials... could have been worse, it was siberia. cold. didn't fancy a stay in a cell over night!

I've just come back from Morocco (Agadir) with my brand new 400D, no problems at all.

I had it in my hand luggage wrapped in a jumper to stop it getting bashed.
