I'll revisit from what I said last night, Mainly as I was a little tipsy and on my phone.
It really all depends on two key factors. What's your budget, and what you're shooting. Or at least planning on.
I'll still stand by my first option, which is the standard kit lens. 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS(If you can get one). It's one I've been using, and currently using at the moment, and It's never failed me whilst learning. There are pro's and con's with this lens, As with all lenses.
The main cons with this are:
- The apertures aren't constant
- It's not incredibly sharp
- It's not all glass lenses, Some elements are plastic
I do find the pro's being:
- It's cheaply sourced second hand, Around £40-50
- It's good for a newbie to photography, Will give you decent wide angles and offer some zoom(not alot)
The main key feature being that it's cheap is one reason I'd look to purchase one if I was new to photography. If you then don't use it as often as you'd like, You're not out of pocket that much. If you have extra cash, you could then look to buying a telephoto lens, My suggestion is maybe a Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS. Can pick these up for about £120 if you're lucky. Will give you alot more reach from 55mm and add's the bonus of IS to the lens. I've used one, they're not too bad, The only other telephoto lens I can comment on using is a 70-200mm F4 L, But I'd be thinking that would be out of budget at the moment.
The other option I'd suggest is a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.
Second hand will cost you around £180-£200, but you'd be getting a lot more lens than the Kit lens. It's Sharper, faster and built a lot better. It's a lens I'll be buying at the end of the month.
