All round lens ?

im looking at getting a eos 450d but ive read that the 18-55mm kit lens is poor quality , so im now considering buying a body only and then buying a canon EF 24-105mm F4 IS lens seperatley

would this be a suitable all rounder/beginner lens. im into a wide variety of photograpahy at the moment as ive not the expieriance to know what i wish to specialise in , would this lens meet these requirments?

It depends on what you mean by poor quality - what you use as your reference.

The original 18-55mm non IS was a bag of shyte but the newer IS model is optically improved. Personally I would get the IS kit lens, the 55-250IS and save the rest of your money - for all you know you may not use the 24-105 range much at all.
 
it would be, but the 18-55IS isn't that poor, the 18-55 was but the IS is a leap optically aswell

there's a significant difference between 18mm and 24mm at the wide end

and a mahoosive difference in cost, which I would put toward a 40d or 50d and 17-85 kit, or a 70-200 f4L or a sigma 70-200 AND a tamron 17-55 f2.8 to go with your 450d

imho any of those would be better options
 
It all rather depends on your definition of "all round" - I'd take that term to mean suitable for all photography.... portrait, sports, wildlife, macro, landscape, walkabout... and no one lens will cover you for all of those!

One of the 18-55 ish lenses is probably the best bet for a general family snapshot type thing, and if you want better than the kit lens, look to one of the constant f2.8 lenses from either Sigma or Tamron.
 
I don't think the original 18-55 was that bad, I still use it on a regular basis... what is that that is supposedly so bad with it?
 
Its just not as sharp as something like the ones I described above... but then again its not a 300 quid lens...

Exactly... it's not brilliant by any means but it's certainly more than capable for a beginner lens... unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket of course in which case it's always best to get a nicer lens
 
Ive read various reviews on the eos 450 and 500d which are supplied with this lens and it lead me to believe the lens is poor in terms of sharpness and contrast and is of poor build quality , judging by your responses il assume this is unfounded?

By all round i mean a lens that will be jack of all trades so to speak eg can be turned to most areas eg i could use it for motorsport if i wish i know it wouldnt be as good as a telephoto with a long focal length but i require it to be able to take shots that can hold there own in terms of quality. Does any one have any sample images using this "kit" lens please?
 
No, you won't get much luck with the kit lens for motorsport... too slow at focusing and nothing like sharp enough when you compare it to what you'll see on here from nearly everyone (and I'm not talking comparing it to the absolute top notch stuff either).

I used to use my Canon kit lens for a few attempts at landscapes/holiday snaps and it was ok for that, but creating a proper piece of art, its lacking a fair bit in softness and keeping CA under control.
 
I do love it when that happens - can we all shout 'Snap!'...?
