Same happened last year around this time, would I be right in thinking there is so much for them to harvest out in the wild so to speak and thats where they are.

What do I normally get

Sparrows (seems like 100s at times), Blackbirds, Robins, Green/Goldfinch Siskin, dunnocks etc

There was a very brief appearance yesterday of about 20 Long tailed tits only about the 3rd time have seen them

Could be right Bob, birds form mixed flocks and can be often seen on newly harvested ground, they will be back so keep your feeders stocked.

:plusone: A lot of fields are being ploughed up at the moment which always supplies a lot of natural food, insects etc. I am still wondering if some are still breeding as well seeing as it is still mild  A neighbour of mine mentioned to me a couple of days back that there was some disease going around that was wiping out a lot of our native species. Personally I have not heard or read anything about that.

I read about this the other day. Seems to be affecting Finches mainly. :'(

Horrible disease and according to the report, Outbreaks tend to be most severe and most frequent from August to October, so we are right in the middle of it.

Well the finches I get just now (mainly Siskins) flock around the feeders all day long at the moment - wouldn't say they're lethargic though.

I guess keeping everything clean is order of the day.

yup read about the disease too

link to a news report about it

Caught tail end of this story last night I think it was the One Show, at least once a week wash out and rinse with soapy water (washing up liquid)

Yet form here bbc
Bird lovers are being advised to disinfect feeders regularly to minimise the risk of infection.

Are they actually recomending "Disenfectant" or do they mean disinfect with soapy water

Thanks for the link Dan

No worries, just hope this is not as serious as it sounds, hopefully immunity can spread and all will be fine. Dont like the idea of a land with less finches.
