Yes
Its that time again and I need to replace my printer/scanner/copier,

Due to space constraints and requirements I have no choice but to accept the compromise of a multi function machine.

Looking for something that has ink tanks rather than cartridges.

So what's out there at the moment?

Have you thought of HP instant ink?
Costa about £5 a month for 100 prints, even if it is 100 A4 best quality photos, and they automatically send the cartridges to you when the printer needs them.
Photo quality is also excellent

Canon Pixma G650, quite happy with ours though no duplex printing, Black Friday in about a month if you can wait.

I have the Epson ET-8550 which is an A3+ printer.
The scanner is bigger than A4
Edit ~ just checked and scanner size is:-
8.5" x 14" (216 x 355.6 mm)

There is also it's A4 brother the ET-8500

I also have the Epson ET-8550 and have been very happy with it. It uses bottles to refill the ink and so far I haven't even topped them up in over a year. I got a 3 year guarantee from John Lewis. It does do duplex and scanning. Photo print quality and colours etc is not so good as my Canon Pro 1 but as a general all rounder it's pretty good and I use it often for smaller prints.

Nick, These are spendy, but the extra for the A3 one is relatively small. I'm having a continuing argument with myself as to whether I have sufficient space for the bigger on. It's not much bigger; a couple of inches wider and slightly deeper, IIRC. But if you actually want to print A3 you need at least 50cm of headroom. Actual dimensions on another thread... EDIT: Wrong, they were in a PM conversation with @Box Brownie . He has 53cm vertical height to print A3+. Excellent review at https://www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/

I forgot to add that I worked out I spent over £600 on inks for my £50 Canon all-in-one from 11 years ago (over £1,000 at today's prices)...

I also had a look at the Canon G650, I think at the time it was the only other 5-ink [EDIT: tank] printer, but it didn't seem to have a tray for paper so it would be sticking out the top. Didn't think that would work for a family all-in-one. But maybe @nog can correct me...

Yeah just the rear tray paper feed, one of the savings to get the price down

Is that 53cm from the top of the printer or 53cm from desk height?
In the review page that @ChrisR linked there is this picture

The 53cm is 'mine' and that is the gap between the shelf on which my printer sits and the shelf above.

That gap is just about enough, especially as my shelf unit is 50cm deep and against a wall. Therefore, the paper when in the rear 'tray' cannot drop backwards quite as far as shown in Keith's picture i.e. the fully extended tray almost touches the wall.

PS if I could have made the vertical spacing I bit more I would have but needed to keep the whole spacing on the IKEA unit "tight" (4 shelves ~ base & top ones and the printer shelf with the only other one above that. Space is at a premium:)

In our "computer unit" the gap between the printer shelf and the keyboard shelf is just 50 cm. However, both slide, so I'm thinking that with the printer most of the way back and the keyboard tray forward, I could probably just about manage A3!

I have recently taken a different approach to this issue, after being totally fed up with inkjet printers over the years. I've bought a Brother black and white laser printer (with scanner/copied function), which is way more reliable than my previous inkjet printer, even when it was new. I will also get a small dye sub printer for small photos, and continue to use a lab for larger prints.

And I will enjoy being free of demands to feed my inkjet printer another expensive cartridge pretty much any time I even think about printing anything.

Yes, that's what turned me off the G650. I'm happy to load photo paper in a top slot when I need it, but I don't want to leave normal A4 printer paper sticking out, sure it would get dusty and/or discolour. It has 6 dye inks which is potentially good. Reviews for photo work are not as good as the Epson, but it's much cheaper.

I'm surprised Canon haven't released a better version yet.

What did you decide, Nick?

I added an ET-8550 to my WinYourOctoberWishList on John lewis, and was expecting to have ordered it by now, but strangely they have not told me I have won! Now waiting for Black Friday prices, hey ho (which will if they exist be accompanied by "Out of stock", I know how the universe works).

ET-8550 turned up in Ama$on for £567, which is cheaper than the Wex sale price on the ET-8500! Of course no-one with any principles would buy from there, and I have pr... turns out I don't have many principles when it's £80 cheaper! Just need to check the size again.

We have an ET-3850, which is an A4 version - the ET series are significantly more expensive to buy in the first place, but are so much cheaper to run they pay for themselves very quickly.
Not sure how long we've had ours (certainly over a year), and have only just had to buy 1 cyan ink bottle - still have the second black bottle that came with it unopened.
We do have a b&w laser we use for text, but only as we already had it - the ET would happily cover both jobs.

IIRC Epson were offering a warranty extension free of charge........but only if bought either direct or I think from a specified list of sellers. If my recall is correct are both Amazon & WEX on the list?
