I am off to Waddington at the end of the month weather permitting and thinking about hiring a lens. I have used my Canon 70-300 IS with some reasonable results but as I can't afford something better I fancy hiring one.

Been looking here http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/ but not sure what would be best for me.

Any recommendations would be good thanks.

Matt :)

The 100-400 is very popular with airshow folk. Depends how much you want to spend on hire.
You could go crazy and a 500 or 600mm

I will second the 100-400 its great, I would get it a few days before the show though to get used to the push and pull, its just down right wierd. Its also bloody heavy :).

I went to the show last year and borrowed a guys 100-400 and I could definitely tell the ones I took with it compared to the Tamron 28-300 VC lens I had with me, which was the longest I had at the time. This year I'm going with a pair of Sigma's, a 120-400 OS for my 60D and a 150-500 OS for my 5D3. I did buy a Canon 100-400 L later on last year but when I compared it closely to my 150-500 Sigma, the Sigma came out on top but only just. The crowd line is pretty close at Waddington so your 70-300 would manage pretty well, but either of the Sigma's or the 100-400 lens will do you proud. Hope to see you there, and I hope the Vulcan makes it as it's a bit touch and go at the moment.

Thanks for the info

I had been looking at the 100-400 but just needed some clarification. Its around £80 for 3 days hire plus delivery there and back. Would be nice to have a play with one to see how I get on.

Nice pics Donki

Modchild - Yeah I went to Waddo a couple of years back. One of the best airshows I've been to so far. I don't think the Vulcan will be fixed in time. Even if they have the engines in, I reckon its going to take a while getting all the tests done and passed off to be airworthy again. Tis a shame :(

The flightline is close.

These were with a 70-300 VR

Not going this year as I can't face the 5 hour wait to get as far as the perimeter fence when leaving.

Aim to be getting there no later than 6.30 AM if you want to park close to the flight line as there will be queues at that time already.

I'm normally parked up in about half an hour and can get home in less than 20 minutes, as I've got a disabled pass I get to park about 5 minutes drive away. Most of the time is taken up by packing my kit away and then it's a 2 minute walk to the car.

Can I go with you next year then? :)

You would have to sit on the roof rack I think, between passengers and camera gear there's not a lot of room left, might have to get a bus pass next year

I took my 70-300 canon IS to the sunderland airshow and it was okay, but not great.
I'm hoping to get more out of my sigma 2.8 OS with a 2xTC on board.
at f8-9 is pretty good. sharpness increases a lot from f5.6 which is wide open on the TC.

what apertures were theses shots at? they seem pretty sharp to me. :)

Well I have hired one at a cost of £58 for 3 days hire including delivery.

Does anyone have any hints or tips when using this lens?

Damn, I was planning on taking my 70-300 this year.
Might have to consider a weekend hire myself now. Best I hire something ridiculously expensive so I'm not tempted to buy one afterwards
