This competition is now open at www.airscene.co.uk.

Current monthly prizes include a copy of 'Aviation History' courtesy of Anne Millbrooke, and 2 tickets to exclusive viewing area at Airbourne 2008 Airshow, some free banner advertising + Airscene will showcase a selection of the winners work for free.

If you have ever entered an Airscene competition you will know that I work tirelessly in getting prizes, so even though there may only be one of two right now, more will become available during the year.

As for what happens with your photo's ... They will not appear in a magazine, book, advertising etc. They WILL appear only on the competition page, and in any article by sponsors SPECIFICALLY mentioning this competition.

This competition has opened early this year due to requests in previous years to allow entrants the opportunity to prepare work for the early themes of this competition.

I look forward to receiving your entries,

regards,

Ian

Bookmarked. Well chosen themes which will force different images to be submitted.

Thank for that vote of confidence

I didnt run this competition last year due to losing one of my helpers (moved abroad) - it was started but abandoned before it even got started as I had no time to run both competitions last year.

Coming up with themes for this really was like banging my head against a wall :bang:, sooooooooo hard trying to widen such a narrow field.

Ian

The Airscene Aviation Photographer of the Year 2008 competition is now officially open, with the first theme 'Prop Power' closing on 31st January.

We are accepting entries to all themes in response to requests from prospective competition sponsors. We have currently secured around £300, with around £150 in value going to the overall winner and half of the monthly themes covered already.

With only 13 entrants submitting photos across the first 3 themes so far, the competition is still very much open. The competition is open to both amateurs and professionals, however entries must have been taken no more than 12 months earlier than the closing date for each theme.

Please help Airscene to secure more prizes for you, and get your entries in. I look forward to receiving your entries, and wish you all Good Luck.

Happy New Year,

Ian

What's this about 1st prize only going to U.K. entries and 1st rated non-U.K. entry getting 2nd place?

Hi Anton,

It doesnt actually say that, but to clarify...

All UK sponsors so far will ONLY post prizes to UK recipients. Fortunately the author Anne Millbrooke came to my rescue by offering a couple of copies of her book for Airscene competitions.

Anne herself is prepared to post anywhere in the world, thus this prize is available to anyone whether in the UK or not.

In previous competitions, non UK winners would receive nothing, and this may well be the case in future competitions, but at least for this competition I can offer something to non UK winners.

To this end if a non UK entrant is placed 1st or 2nd they will receive the only prize I have available to them, and the highest placed UK entrant will receive the stated first prize. I hope this makes sense.

Just a word in case this is felt to be unfair.. Airscene is a non-commercial website and is not used to generate income (no ppc ads etc). I pay the hosting fee's myself and pretty much build and run it with only occasional assistance, as I have for 10 years now. I do a considerable amount of chasing around for prizes and always ask that sponsors deliver the prizes direct, as it would cost me a small fortune.

I look forward to your entry Anton,

Good Luck,
Ian:)

That does make sense and thanks for the quick personal response:thumbs:

So if you guys can get more (international?) exposure then you can obviously "go big" in terms of all these other things as you described.

Seeing the orange line in rules just looked a bit like us foreigners:lol: weren't that welcome.

Sorted though and will see if I can churn out something worth entering:thumbs:

Yes, in a way Anton. This is the first year for the Airscene poty competition, although the calendar competition has been running for a few years now. I have been fortunate that Key Publishing are interested in sponsoring the competition for the last 2 years, and hopefully into next years calendar competition too.

However its still a little bit catch 22 with the poty comp, I need prizes to get interest in the comp built up, and I need entries to increase interest from sponsors

I am awaiting confirmation of prizes from 2 more sponsors, and have emails to send and phonecalls to make again this month. I cannot promise anything, but am trying my best to secure more prizes for foreign entrants too. Hopefully as the competition grows, so will the prize pot.

I read 'somewhere' that TP members managed to grab the bulk of the prize pot from my recent calendar competition. Well done to those winners, and thanks for helping the competition to grow (already had interest in next years comp).

Ian

Hi all,

Just over one week to go before theme 1 "Prop Power" closes, and so far a disappointing turnout with only 16 entries received to date.

To try and entice you a little bit more, I have just got off the phone to Snapperstuff.com who are putting a package of prizes together to add towards the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and the themes which do not currently have prizes. This should push the 1st place prize value to around £300. I expect to make announcement on this within the next few days.

There is further interest in the competition from London Camera Exchange and 1 or 2 small photography shops, who expect to commit around the end of February. Now I need your help to keep these sponsors on board....

Just to clarify one point - although this is a themed competition, you may still submit entries taken as far back as january 2007, as long as they are not for sale before the closing date of the relevant theme, nor been submitted to any other Airscene competition. This rule has been included because of our short airshow season here in the UK, and I want to allow everyone the greatest possible chance of entering and winning a prize.

So lets get this competition well and truly off the ground, get your entries in before midnight (GMT) 31st January and hopefully the sponsors will keep on coming rather than abandon us.

regards,

Ian

Hi all,

Less than 12 hours to go before them 1 "Prop Power" closes. If you havent got your entry in, then get searching through your photos and then nip along to http://www.airscene.co.uk/aviation_photographer_of_the_year_2008.php and get your entry in before midnight tonight.

Anne Millbrooke, the author of "Aviation History" will be one of the 3 judges for this theme. Southampton aviation artist Stuart Brown will be another, and the 3rd will be one of the other 3 available sponsors.

Each judge will award points in the same fashion as the calendar competition, selecting their 12 favourites and awarding points from 12 down to 1. Quite a few points are up for grabs here, and theoretically the best photo can receive up to 36 points, although it is more likely for the points to be spread around 3 or 4 top entries.

As each individual set of results are received they will be entered into the Entries and Results table. When the final results are in, the points tallies will be coloured green, with first place in that theme coloured red, and 2 runners up in blue. Hopefully the results will take no more than a couple of days, but as before please allow up to 1 week.

In the event of a tie for first place, I shall determine which entry shall receive the prize for that theme. No extra points will be awarded.

In other news: It is looking hopeful that Key Publishing Ltd will be sponsoring this years calendar competition, and I am in discussion with regard to either increasing the value of the book prizes or making prizes available to overseas entries too.

I look forward to your entries,

Good Luck,

Ian

have just entered feb comp....great site and some truly fab prizes.....keep up the good work:) xxx

Hi all,

The final set of results are now in for theme 1, and very well done to all who scored points, and commiserations to those who didnt.

Special congratulations this month go to Neil Darby from Tilehurst for taking this months prize having accrued a total of 32 points.

010-01_thumb.jpg

Neil's prize will be on its way to him shortly. (Not sure if he is from TP - but thought I'd let you know)

Luke Glazzard holds 2nd place with 24 points and 2 others are in joint 3rd place with 21 points. Check out the Entries and Results table to see how you did.

Still early days yet, and plenty of points up for grabs... Theme 2 "Old Age" is really starting to look interesting and will certainly draw upon your creative and technical skills, I am very impressed so far.

Good Luck to you all, I look forward to receiving your entries.

Ian

www.airscene.co.uk

Managed to get 5th in the first round hope to do better with next month

Hi all,

Less than 2 weeks left to get your entries in for theme 2 "Old Age". If you have a photograph of any aircraft taken anytime after 1st January 2007 - get it into photoshop or paintshop and "age" your photograph. We have received only 15 entries so far, but the overall standard is exceptionally high with a lot of creative genius coming through.

I understand that their are only a handful of airshows at this time of year, which is why the rules allow you to go through your back catalogue from last year. There is no shortlisting for this competition so all entries are accepted, as long as your entry is not for sale before the closing date of the theme, and has not appeared in any other Airscene competition. Upon submission it is taken that the entry is the property of the entrant and complies with all other rules.

This months prize is a 1GB USB memory stick courtesy of Icom UK Ltd, and overall 1st place prizes now stand at £300 and includes an Aviation print fom Southampton artist Stuart Brown, a 20" x 16" print (winners choice) courtesy of Togsprint, Icom merchandise and a slection of ThinkTANK accessories courtesy of Snapperstuff.

I am in talks with 3 prospective sponsors and hope to make further prize announcements later in the year.

I look forward to receiving your entries,

Good Luck,
Ian

Hi all,

Theme 2 "old Age" comes to a close officially at midnight this coming friday, however as I will not be working at midnight I shall not reject any entries received by 9am on the following morning. This unofficial extension will apply to all themes so as to allow entries when I check my email in the morning.

Only 18 entries received so far for theme 2, and several have been pretty outstanding in my opinion. Alas I am not judging so it is not my eye you need to please. Southampton aviation artist Stuart Brown will be one of the judges for this theme, along with Ian Lockyer from Icom and one other judge (either from Togsprint or Snapperstuff). Another Icom 1GB flash memory stick is up for grabs this month, and all points earned will be added to your running totals (entered in brackets on results table) - the overall winner currently stands to win around £300 of pretty cool prizes courtesy of our sponsors. Anne Millbrooke will not be judging this theme due to other commitments, however I will invite her to make comments on the top 12 if anyone would like that.

Please do enter if you havent done so already, there are still a maximum of 36 points up for grabs in each theme (324 across the remaining 9 themes), so still very much an open competition. These competitions are run to provide a venue for aviation enthusiasts/photographers a chance to win some prizes in their favoured niche, your support is paramount in ensuring the continuation of these competitions and even greater sponsorship in future years. I am currently looking to add more prizes to the overall winners prize pot, and now expect to be able to make a further announcement in March or sooner.

This years calendar competition will begin again on 1st April, and already Key Publishing Ltd have promised another £250 of aviation book prizes spread across 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as in previous years. Basic rules will be slightly different this year, with each entrant allowed to submit 2 entries, entries may be taken as far back as January 2007, however one entry MUST be taken at an airshow during 2008. As with all Airscene competitions amateurs and professionals alike may enter, but no entry must be available for sale prior to the closing date of the competition (or relevant theme).

I look forward to receiving your entries,

Good Luck,

Ian

Hi all,

The final set of results are now in for theme 2 "Old Age", and the final scores being so close is a reflection of the quality of submission this month.

Congratulations this month go to Simon Thomas from Newark for taking this months prize having accrued a total of 28 points.

035-02_thumb.jpg

Last months winner made another strong appearance, only missing out on 1st place by a single point, with Ian Schofield (2nd prize winner in last years calendar competition) coming a close 3rd.

8 more themes to go and plenty of points up for grabs... Theme 3 "Close Up" closes on 31st March and provides a good opportunity to practice your cropping technique or get out with your long lenses at your local airport.

Good Luck to you all, I look forward to receiving your entries.

Ian

Hi all,

The final set of results are in for the "Close Up" theme, and this months prize goes to Bill Edwards for his photo of a Tornado a valley (presumably in Wales somewhere).

028-03_thumb.jpg

This months voting actually resulted in a tie between Bill and Gergely Groz, and as I only have one prize to give away each month I had to make the final decision. Both entries were technically very good, but Bill's entry seemed far more interesting and that clinched it for me.

This months theme "Digital" is perhaps the toughest of the lot, and as such carries our biggest monthly prize - Any JustFlight product up to £30 in value (great prize for any flight simmers out there). Closing date for entries is midnight on 30th April. Already has some excellent entries, and a lot of thinking out of the box - can you do better?

A maximum of 36 points can be awarded to any single entry per theme, so with up to 252 points still to be earned across the remaining 7 themes, there is still a good chance of coming in late and landing one of the top 3 places.

I look forward to your entries for this one,

Good Luck,

Ian

Hi all,

The final set of results are now in for theme 4 "Digital".

Congratulations this month go to Dean Feltimo from Maidenhead who netted 30 points, and wins himself any flight sim product up to £30 in value courtesy of Just Flight

011-04_thumb.jpg

This theme was perhaps the most challenging of the 10 themes, and I feel this was reflected in the low number of entries.

The next theme is "Civil Aviation", and is perhaps the least challenging, inlight of the fact that most of us live pretty close to an airfield or airport of some kind.

To find out more and enter this month, visit our competition page. The prize up for grabs this month is a ThinkTANK Photo Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket courtesy of Snapperstuff Ltd.

Good Luck,

Ian

Hi all,

Summer is finally here, and the airshow season is well and truly under way. I'll try not to waffle on too much, so you can all get back out on those patio's and soak up this year's sunshine allocation.

Theme 5 "Civil Aviation" proved to be another difficult theme to judge, with each of the 3 judges choosing a different image as their personal favourite. Tim Knifton came into this competition very early and flooded me with entries for the first 8 themes in about a week or so. A disappointing set of results across the first 4 themes kept Tim right at the bottom of the results table, until this month when he managed to grab 26 points and first place with the entry shown below:

004-05_thumb.jpg

Malcolm Casson managed came in 2nd with 25 points pushing himself up towards the leaders, and Stefan Pankow netted 23 points for 3rd place with his only entry in the competition to date.

The leaderboard has barely changed over the last few months and currently stands as follows:

Neil Darby 104 points

Gergely Grosz 90 points

Simon Thomas 84 points

This can all change, and there are still plenty of contenders for the prize positions as we are only half way through with up to 180 points still up for grabs over the next 5 themes. What's more I have been given permission to give away 3 more free advertising prizes on the Uradnet aviation banner network, so I shall be coupling these with Showcase prizes on Airscene to make 3 runners up places.

This months theme is "In Control", and is gonna be tough due to the number of possible interpretations. If you think you are good enough - get your entry in and have a crack. Good Luck.

Hi all,

The final set of results are now in for theme 6 “In Control” and for the first time in this competition our winner has run off with maximum 36 points. Congratultions go to Dean Feltimo of Maidenhead for his win, which also makes him our first winner to win 2 monthly prizes.

011-06_thumb.jpg

The judges had quite a job to do this month due to the sheer variety of interpretations, and I made sure I pushed the judges to base their voting on theme interpretation along with image quality.

In trying to keep variety, theme 7 is entitled “The Public” - this could be Airshow crowd shots, individuals, or waiting in a queue of cars, or perhaps even an airport terminal crowd shot. You may even come up with some ideas of your own, but this is going to be tough and snap shots simply will not do!

The prize for this theme is ThinkTANK Photo Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket courtesy of Snapperstuff Ltd. If you think you are good enough… Good Luck, and I look forward to your entries.

Hi all,

Theme 7 "The Public" is now closed and all votes are in. I have had to call in one of my regular Airscene judges as I have been unable to make contact with the planned judge since last week,

As this is an aviation photography competition; the themes were picked to try and reflect all aspects of aviation, and I must confess to being a little disappointed that all entries this month were taken at airshows when the theme could have been more widely interpreted.

Despite this there were some outstanding entries, which is evident from the fact that no 2 judges had the same favourites. There could be only one winner though, and this month Robert Scott from Ipswich grabs the prize, after netting a total of 31 points, with the following entry:

030-07_thumb.jpg

Dean Feltimo almost scooped up his 3rd prize in this competition with 30 points, whilst Ian Hews and Simon Thomas came in joint 3rd with 23 points.

The leaderboard now stands as follows:

Neil Darby 144 points

Gergely Grosz 119 points

Dean Feltimo 114 points

Simon Thomas 114 points

With 108 points still up for grabs over the next 3 themes anything can happen, however it will require a special effort to grab the top slot from Neil Darby who has been in the top 3 four times, and scored at least 10 points in each theme so far - talk about consistency!

Another Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket up for grabs this month courtesy of Snapperstuff in them 8 "Aerobatics", so even if you are new to the competition and cant get to the prize positions, why not try and take this prize away from the leaders? I look forward to your entries...

Hi all,

Theme 8 "aerobatics" is closed and all results are now in. This was a pretty tight affair at the top with the top 3 just a single point away from each other. Scooping this months prize is competition newcomer Chris Harris with 28 points, second with 27 is Darren Chaplin, and my personal favourite of the month came 3rd with 26 points courtesy of Ian Schofield. Chris wins a Pee Wee Pixel Pocker Rocket courtesy of Snapperstuff.

Winning Entry:

051-08_thumb.jpg

A few changes again on the leaderboard as Simon Thomas and gergely Grosz continue their tussle for position only for Dean Feltimo to sneak in behind and position himself in 2nd place. So the leaderboard now looks like this with 2 themes to go:

Neil Darby - 147 points

Dean Feltimo - 136 points

Gergely Grosz - 129 points

Simon Thomas - 117 points

Theme 9 "The Jet Age" is Septembers theme, and another Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket is up for grabs this month. So if you have any photos of jets that you have taken and want to cause more upset for the leaders, send in your entry and see how you get on. Note that your entry must not have been taken any earlier than January 1st 2007. Good Luck, and I look forward to receiving your entries.

*Note that I shall make every attempt to post theme 9 results within a few days of the theme closing, however I am overseas in October, and will not be able to post late results from the judges. Subsequently entries to theme 10 will NOT be posted until after the 18th October.

Hi all,

Theme 9 "The Jet Age" is closed and all results are now in. This one was a tussle between 2 entries really, with Bill Edwards and Dean Feltimo both getting a 1st and 2nd placing from 2 different judges, however Bill came out on top with another of his cracking lowlevel entries and getting himself another 33 points and his 2nd win in this competition. Bill wins a Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket courtesy of Snapperstuff.

Winning Entry:

028-09_thumb.jpg

Dean Feltimo came in second with 30 points and moves to only 3 points behind the competition leader in what now looks like a bit of a scrap between the two of them. Neil will be a bit disappointed I am sure, as his (almost identical entry) was awarded 8 points less than Deans. Neil and Dean will likely begin celebrating soon, as they will almost certainly scoop 1st and 2nd places between themselves.

Gergely Grosz scored just a single point in this theme - just enough to keep hold of 3rd place for the moment, with 5 entrants hot on his heels and still in with a chance to scoop 3rd place. Gergely could still end up in a draw with Dean Feltimo for 2nd place, but this would take a miracle or two.. with Gergely needing to score maximum points and hope that Dean scores nil!

So the battle for 1st and 2nd is on, and the battle for 3rd place will sure be interesting. Dont forget though, those not in with a chance of a top 3 place can still win the monthly prize and at the same time provide an interesting spoiler for the scraps at the top.

So the leaderboard now looks like this with just 1 theme left to go:

Neil Darby - 169 points

Dean Feltimo - 166 points

Gergely Grosz - 130 points

Ian Hews - 128 points

Simon Thomas - 124 points

Malcolm Casson - 122 points

Ian Schofield - 116 points

Adrian Glazzard - 110 points

Theme 10 "Hover" is Octobers theme, and another Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket is up for grabs this month. So if you have any photos of Harriers or Helicopters that you have taken and want to cause more upset for the leaders, send in your entry and see how you get on. Note that your entry must not have been taken any earlier than January 1st 2007. Good Luck, and I look forward to receiving your entries.

Well done to Bill, a truly stunning picture.:notworthy: Alot of nail biting now.
Good luck to Neil, and best of luck to all battleing for 3rd place.
Dean:)

Hi all,

The final results for theme 10 "Hover" are now in and the results table is complete. The judges were almost totally unanimous this month; awarding the winner a total of 35 points. This will be slightly disappointing as that 1 extra point would have tied the winner in 3rd place overall. Congratulations go to Adrian Glazzard who wins a ThinkTANK Pee Wee Pixel Pocket Rocket courtesy of Snapperstuff with the following entry:

013-10_thumb.jpg

Cheers Ian, its been a great 10 months. I dont have any fingernails left.
Couldnt have asked for a better finish.
Myself and Neil attend all the airshows together, and work at the same company, so as you can imagine, there has been some good banter. It was great Neil won, he has led from the begining. Just out of intrest, did you notice how the 1st, 2nd, 3rd places went to consecutive competitors, nos 10, 11,12.
Heres to next year.
Dean:)

Great competition, Mrs Cheesy and I really enjoyed taking part and we can't wait for next year.

As an aside, does anyone else find the 'comments' from Anne to be innane. IMHO!

I would be interested to hear the views of anyone else who has submitted images and would like to point out that I say this despite recieving some interesting, if pointless, comments from her.
