I am going to an Air Show at Shaw AFB. Does any one have any tips for shooting moving planes? I will probably have to use my 300 mm lens. But any info will help me.
Try to get on the flightline, that is right at the front of the viewing area, to get as much unobstructed view of the action as possible.
You may want to do a few practice shots of planes landing/flybys to get a feel for it - check your results.
I would guess you will be needing a shutter speed of at least 1/500 unless there are any prop driven planes and you want to blur the props.
Well I guess this post is a little too late for you but here's my settings.
For Jets I try to use the fastest shutter speed possible, 1/1000th is a nice start. For prop planes a shutter speed of 1/250th gives pretty nice prop blur whilst giving you a fast enough shutter speed to hand hold the camera. Helicopters are usually the same as prop planes, you'll never get a great disc look to the main rotors as these are spinning too slowly.
When shooting against a white sky I usually use +0.7 EV.
