after buying a domain

Adam - I was the same so I kept it simple and went with Zenfolio. Had a website with galleries including a password protected client gallery up in less than two hours - its really simple to use. It has an integral blog and I've upgraded it now to include selling options etc. (Discount code available if you go this route, PM if want one but check into other options too to see what is best for your needs.)

Thanks for that. What sort of cost is involved on that if you don't mind me asking. (I'm on my phone at the mo not near a computer)

I think to get the package where you can remove all Zenfolio branding, use your own domain name etc is £100 for the year (less £10 with discount code). Its a bit more (£150 I think, I got mine on an half price sale day!) to self fulfill with your own print products with no charge.

quite a few options out there - for free and payfor - depends on what you end up wanting to do with the site - merchant account so you can sell through the site - or just using as a portal into your business

It's more just going to be a place of reference. I don't intend of starting a business as such, just potential work from word of mouth etc as its a hobby.
I won't be selling anything through it so the cheaper the better

well for that you could setup using google sites - for free and then use a domain name referral service to link to the site
something like 123-reg or freeparking , i have used before for a few sites
i think google now also has a domain service not sure of that
you can buy the domain from the referral site and also get email - there are some disadvantages by doing that - but mainly around the amount of control you get and search engine optimisation

you can always move later - not sure on the fee to move the domain name would be

heres an example www.kbwc.co.uk
if allowed to post here - very cut down now - but has the mapping and google sites - see area and also has form for enquires
and a very simple site
http://www.homecomputingskills.co.uk/

before you buy the domain - you could try out and use the google address
https://sites.google.com/site/homecomputingskills/

then if you are happy buy the domain
