At the weekend I shot a Roller Derby match. First time doing it it was fast and dark, so not easy.

I found most of my photos needed to be chopped in half where I was aiming the camera at the girls faces as that was what I most wanted in Focus. The top of the pictures were empty space. Just wondering would it be a better Idea to set one AF point at the top of the view finder and closing in more?

Also is there a way to set the camera to change the AF point when you change from portrait to landscape it takes the AF point with it? I.e. If I set the Top AF point in Landscape then change to portrait the AF point will still be at the top not on the left. Camera is a 50D.

Just move the focus point when swapping to Portrait orientation - I do mine with the top right button on the back of the camera to access the focus points then use the joystick to select which one I require. It may need some practice!

So it would be a good Idea, when taken shots like this...

to set the AF point towards the top of the viewfinder.

This all assumes you have a body with outer AF points that work in low light. I get these issues a lot with my 5D2. I often and up cropping the final images to get the composition I want.

One of the reasons I really want a 5D3 !

He has a 50d....I can only give advice on what he has - not what he should get!!!

As for the OP, at roller derby, you probably need to have AI servo on so that the camera tries to track the focus of the target or at the very least pre focus on the point you want to shoot.

User error often occurs in low light because of the limitations of the equipment.

As for the photo - what were the settings?

Back button focus and track using the centre point. Slight crop will fix composition if needed

Not sure on the exact settings will have to check when I get home, I did have it on AI Servo though. Settings where probably 70mm, @f2.8, 1/200, 1600 ISO or there abouts.

Shutter speed not fast enough to freeze motion at a roller derby. There are some shots on here from a few RD...do a search for them and if possible check out the settings.
