Hi,

I still can't get to grips with the colour of Canon long telephoto lenses.

They are, unquestionably great lenses, but they look awful!

I know the arguement is that they keep the lenses cool, but is it really necessary?? None of the other manufacturers use such a mucky colour!!

I bought a 70 - 200 2.8L a few years ago to replace my black 80 - 200 2.8L, but it looked so awful, I sent it back, and to this day, still use the 80 - 200 (magic drainpipe), which is still an exeptionally sharp bit of kit!

I bought a 400 5.6L a few days ago, and I love it, but it still looks like an afterthought stuck onto my beautiful black 1 series!

Am I the only one who hates the colour??

It's not the most practical colour is it, especially for wildlife photography? These lenses are designed to be used in The Sahara Desert and in The Himalayas at the other extreme. I don't think Canon are in any doubt that the colour isn't the most popular with the vast majority of users, so I suppose we have to trust them when they tell us it's necessary.

I've fitted my 500mm with a camo lens coat.

:agree:...

I dont half feel conspicuous with a whacking wodge of 'spensive white sticking out infront of my face...
especially in towns.

Occasionally wonder about combining ....

Don't do it!!

Or if you do, sell it to me for peanuts, and I'll invest in a tin of paint stripper:D

The answer is so simple ..... flog it all and move to the DarkSide :naughty: EVERYTHING is Aesthetic!

Yes, but Barry....sometimes I just NEED to be able to use ISO 800+ without having to try to bluff that the shot was taken in the middle of a blizzard!

I know what people mean about the lens being conspicuous, but can't honestly say it worries me unduly. Your average opportunist thief probably wouldn't know what the white colour denotes anyway!

I think Joe can help us here after his "find" on Ebay - Notice the similar aesthetics between those white lenses & this ...

 Paul

Can't really say the colour bothers me too much, none of my stuff gets to stay clean for too long anyway  :( The glass is spotless though ;)

I don't mind the colour, it can always be hidden with tape or neoprene.
Nikon have the option of whitey grey on some of their lenses too.

Great camo if your in the snow. :D

 looks like mine.

I don't know what I would do with a white lens, I feel strange with a black lens pulling it out and taking photos never mind a white one.
