Hi,
got a bit of a problem this weekend, cant deceide on which event to go to, croft is on, but its a bit bland and verry flat, BUT there is always some good racing going on, OR there is a hillclimb at harewood, now i havnt been to harewood before, so i dont no which will be the best for some nice shots.
Croft is closer, and the way it is there at the min, meetings arnt verry regular, so i,m thinking harewood will be on again sooner than croft so i should give harewood a miss this time.
As i havnt been to harewood can anyone tell me what its like to shoot, is there any cover ( i think it will rain :( ), is the backdrop interesting ?,
just thought i,d ask,
cheers,
Dave

Harewood is a great venue, which a huge amount of photographic opportunities from the spectator areas. Here's a gallery of mine from a couple of years ago, all shot from public access areas:-

Nothing has really changed since. The hill is pretty steep, and I am afraid there is not much (any?) in the way of shelter. Harewood only has events monthly, so the next events at both locations will be around at much the same time. Both events are on over two days, so if you can you could take in both over the weekend. I'm planning on heading to Croft on both Saturday and Sunday.

Cheers,

Simon.

Don't forget to consider what's on at each place - there's a provisional timetable for the Croft meeting here.

No idea what the 20/20 Cup is, Google just comes up with cricket stuff.

The 20/20 Cup races are a couple of one off races being offered by DDMC to fill up the race card on Sunday. They will only run if there is enough interest. Basically, they are open to any car from the series running over the weekend with the grid for the first race being set by individual class qualifying time, and the grid for race two being set by the finishing position in race 1. It could be very well subscribed and great racing or it could be a damp squib. Time alone will tell!

Harewood is a lot more scenic than croft. Hillclimb days are usually quite slow burners in my experience, with everything working up to the top ten shootout at the end of the day. There's no real shelter at Harewood, but you can park your car at the top of the hill and watch from inside if it tips it down. Other than that, it's catch shelter in the bogs!
It's pretty decent for photos too, as you can get close to the track, some nice framing through the cottage section, and the outside of the last corner is quite tidy too.
Walking about all day at Harewood is a lot more tiring than croft though, but definitely worth a look if the line up is solid.

I'll be visiting Croft this weekend, predominantly for the Time Attack series (Saturday only). I've never been to the circuit before, so don't know how good or bad it is for photography. Weather isn't looking too promising, so will be packing my waterproofs!

John,

Whether you're signed on media or just a speccy like me, Croft offers some excellent angles. The biggest advantage being signed on will give you this weekend will be the ability to shoot from positions that will provide shelter from the forecasted westerly winds!

Cheers,

Simon.

Could do both, Croft on Saturday and Harewood on Sunday for the British hill climb championship.

If you really wanted something a bit different you could go to Barbon Manor on Saturday where the British championship makes its visit to the shortest, most interesting and scenic round in the country

Thanks Simon, shelter sounds good. I will be signed on as media so look out for the guy who looks like he hasn't a clue where to go :D

If you're signing on, look out for an older guy named Tony Todd. He's a very good friend of mine and is the closest thing Croft has to a resident photographer. I'm sure he would keep you right.

Where to go depends on if you need to get image syndicated quickly after each Time Attack session. You can end up a long way from the media centre for some of he nicer angles and having to cross the track in a couple of places.

Cheers,

Simon.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'd not heard of it before, but I might investigate for a bit of a change!

Barbon is just north of Kirby Longsdale. Have a look on you tube to see what it is like.

Wow, lots of help there lads, thanx,
im working saturday so its a sunday only thing i,m affraid.
I fancy both to be honest, but i think croft will do, i,ll keep the hill for when the weathers a bit better,
cheers again,
Dave

I know it's a bit late now but I did both over the weekend, Croft Sat, harewood Sun.

I think Harewood would be the place to be on a nice warm summers day, it's quite scenic and you only need short lenses as the cars pass within feet of you at some sections.

It is very open though.
