Hi peeps looking for a bit of advice, I have a Canon ix 6550 A3 printer which i use to print from photo shop mainly scans from film negatives.

I was trying to print a picture today which is clearly B and W and on screen looks great all contrasty and very B and W.

On printing on good quality photo paper it seems to have a kind of mauve sheen to it, difficult to explain like a tint.

I have tried a few things like forcing the printer grey scale etc but it doesn't make any difference.

any thoughts?

ok a bit of quality googling seems to indicate a known issue, anyone any suggestions?

Are you using the correct profile, and is your screen calibrated?

Unfortunately, the only real solution is a fresh/new printer. Not because there's anything wrong with yours but because for good B&W prints you need a few grey cartridges to get the smooth greys - using the CMY system to reproduce greyscale will always give a colour cast. The casts can sometimes work fairly well but all too often just look odd instead!

I'm currently trying to use up my stock of inks for my iX4000 Canon printer so it can make way for a Pro100 which I plan on buying after a few recommendations. (Man, I LOVE big prints!)

Hi and thanks, not sure about the profiles but the screen is pretty close to the output.

I am using Lexmark Photo paper Perfect Finish for the A4 and currently 7 day shop own brand Premium Photo for A3.

Im pretty happy with the prints in general its this wierd magenta sheen on the B and W thats confusing.
But as my previous post apparently its a known issue.

Paul, FWIW, I've tried a selection of Ilford Galerie and Canon photo papers and they all end up with a slight cast on my current iX4000 as they did on the previous S820 (both Canon). Park Cameras currently have a rather good offer on the Pro 100 with a set of inks, a pack of paper and a screen calibration device. Hopefully, mine should arrive tomorrow!

:(
Unfortunately, Park are out of stock of one or more of the items I've ordered so they won't be arriving tomorrow. (again, :( !) Never mind, the deal's still good and I'm in no desperate rush for the printer - still got loads of ink to get through for the iX4000 anyway!

Nod it does look a lovely beast but I need to be a bit budget aware i got my ix6550 via my limited company i would have difficulty squeezing one of those in.

I have had a bit of a play today and found a profile that seemed to reel the cast in quite a lot so I think I have a bit of a workarround.

@Nod wow the deal on the pro-100 at park is amazing.

blimey !!!

As Nod has said, getting neutral, cast free monchrome prints on an inkjet is difficult. You do really need a printer with multiple black cartridges to get anywhere near. Printer profiles for the specific paper you are using, are a big step in the right direction, I guess it all depends on how exacting your requirements are. I thought my prints using Fotospeed profiles were good until I compared them to a high end Epson print with umpteen blacks and mine suddenly looked slightly green. So I've sold my HP printer and my new (mid-range!) Epson arrives tomorrow!
I'm sure someone will be along to tell you to send your work to Ilford for printing at some point, and they are indeed very good (and very expensive), but there is some satisfaction in having the flexibility to print when you want and be able to make adjustments to match your screen (recommend printing small first, adjusting, then printing big - it saves a lot of ink and paper!).

@viewfromthenorth which epson did you plump for? The R3000 seems to get good ratings especially with the inkflow setup :-)

The R3000:) It does get expensive with the continuous ink system, probably only worth it if you're doing lots of printing.

Oh i do a fair amount of printing :-_

I am really tempted to get the pro-100 and just take a small hit on my ix6550 at that price.

I can recommend the Pro-100. Image quality is superb.

I'm sat looking at the Park Website with my CC and I think I will go for it.
such a good deal with the extra ink and paper @Nod

Still waiting for an e-mail telling me they're back in stock but I'm not in any great hurry for it so that doesn't matter to me, especially at the price they're offering it at!

I've ordered mine :)

@Nod I got a call from Park to say order accepted but 7-10 days for stock.

Sounds about right. I got an e-mail telling me that they wouldn't be charging me for next day delivery and would be charging my card on despatch of the goods, whenever that might be! (10-14 days as of 28/1. Probably!)

@Nod its all ok for me that I have ordered a set of genuine inks for my ix6550 so I will let the ones it it run down doing a few more nice A3 prints then replace them and look to sell the printer on with full inks. Probably local through Gumtree I still have all the box etc.

Its only a month old and is in perfect condition, I do notice as one person said on here the colour sheen shows up more under fluoro light and under natural light actually almost disappears.

@Nod have you received your printer yet,
still waiting for mine :-(

Not yet. Still got plenty of ink in the old one so using that up!

Paul, had a call this afternoon telling me that it should be with me early next week - probably on Monday. Having seen ChrisWilson's at the weekend, I think some reorganization of my computer room might be needed!

Yes I got the same call, I asked for mine to be posted on Monday for delivery Tuesday :-)

@Nod my printer turned up today, sat in my kitchen its a heavy sucker in its box.
no sign of the extras tho?

Have you opened the box? The extra inks, paper and calibrator were inside the printer box when mine arrived. Mine's on the spare bed ATM, still trying to use the inks in the iX4000!

just have what a dummy all inside :-)

Will be boxing up my ix6500 tomorrow and offering it up for sale.
the three colour inks are low but I ordered a full replacement set for those for the next buyer.

I have to admit the ix6500 for the money is very good value.

I used to work in warehousing and despatch - we used to fill every available space inside boxes. I actually checked while the delivery guy was here since one end of the tape was split. He was quite happy for me to do so, especially since I hadn't moaned at him for delivering before 8am!

Well fully assembled and tested.
must admit my first print was a nervous black and white one.

and yep its all there, so amazing when you place a pukka black and white next to simulated.....massive difference but yey such a subtle difference.

how are you guys finding the pro 100 printer , just bit the bullet and git one from wex with extra inks and 50 sheets of a3+ paper, i will be ordering a refill kit from octoink also after doing a bit of research on the interweb

The test B and W print I did just to test the system was epic.
