Hi folks
I have just taken my first steps back in to the world of film for some years now:)
Got myself an Olympus OM10 and 50 1.8 and some Ilford film on the way from the classifieds here. I'm not too bothered yet about the manual adapter for the OM10 just yet - there are loads on eBay so will get one soon.

I'm just wondering if there is any advice regarding film and processing anyone can give me. Particularly after info on effects of time on expired film.
Normally I prefer black and white when using digital so will probably stick with that for film too. I think it will probably be used for street and landscape mainly too:)

Interesting times ahead with a lot to learn and re-learn.
Thanks
Julian

the sensisivity drops with age, so you should probably rate the iso abit lower

dont know, abit, i guess. ive had some way out of date c41 processed, and shot at its native iso, terrible :)

It's not an exact science as a lot depends on how old it is and how it's been stored.
Shooting old stock is all very well if you're not fussed about the outcome but if you're after a particular 'look' then you need to be in control of all the elements and you won't know how a film will react if you don't know it's background.

As a rough guide you can add one stop for every decade the film is past it's use by date.

You can always ask one of the better companies in this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/film-developing-in-the-uk.341566/ for some advice or even get them to do a clip test before processing the main roll.

Generally if the film is only a few years old and has been stored well then there should be little or no decrease in sensitivity and little degradation in quality.

But if you want to find out if your camera is working properly use a roll of cheap Agfa Vista available from your local Poundland and get it processed and scanned (you can even do that at some Tesco's and Asda's for £1), at least then if the shots come out a bit s*** you'll know that it's not the film or the processing and your camera needs a CLA.

Thanks folks - should give me something to go on. Looks like a visit to Poundland is on the cards some time soon:)

If you're using consumer B&W the latitude is amazing, half a stop here or there is nothing. Not sure about pro films (assuming you were the buyer of the Ilford Delta 100 who got in before me!), which might be a bit more sensitive. My son gave me a couple of rolls of Delta 100 last week, that he's had kicking around in a drawer for an unknown period, and I'm shooting at 80, I think.

Yeah sorry - that was me.
I remembered Ilford being good so thought I'd give that a go:)
Will be trying the Poundland stuff first though before I put any of that in there. Want to be sure the shutter speeds and light seals are all ok before I use that film.
The shutter sounds ok - all speeds seem different to the ear and the light seals look to be roughly ok. Some dust in the lens but it's not a new lens so that's ok.

boots is another fairly cheap option for local film dev, specialy if you get prints, and they do 9x6 inch :D

No film at Poundland:(
The man stacking shelves was most helpful - checked the stock inventory and orders and said nothing due to come in. Reckoned when it is in it goes pretty quick too with people buying it in bulk.
£8 for 3x 24 exposures in Tesco - will have to do for now.

Well lets hope it's not the other way round..i.e. it was so slow to shift they won't order any more :( Maybe eventually we can organise a supply system when some have plenty in their area and others without. It's only £2.60 postage for small parcels of say 20 (maybe more film).

Gone up a further 20p, Brian!
