Ok so those of you who have read my entry in the welcome page will know that I won't be getting my first SLR until after Christmas (bummer I know).

That said, my friend has agreed to take me to a place in between Barnsley and Wakefield called Newmillerdam, its sort of a lake/wood/walk kind of place. Plenty of nature about be it trees or birds etc. She is a tog herself so will be able to offer me plenty of advice and tips on the day but I was wondering if any of you have any advice going spare? Be it what to shoot, how to shoot, what to avoid etc...anything would be a great big help to me!

I will only be using my standard digital camera but I guess its better than nothing! I'm just raring to go!!!!

Thanks in advance guys and gals x

Hi combatfairy, welcome to TP

I wouldn't worry too much about making a mental list of what you should and shouldn't shoot on your outing. Just go along and watch, listen, and learn. If you see something that you like the look of, take a picture of it.

If it works for you, then it's a picture worth taking. I'm sure your friend will be able to advise you on the technical side of things there and then, so don't worry too much about that.

First and foremost, have fun!

When you are done, upload some of the shots to the forum and there will be plenty of people along to offer advice on what you took and how you may be able to improve it for next time.

(Make sure you dress to keep warm too. Nothing kills the creative mood quicker than not being able to feel your fingers!)

Oh I plan to dress warm! I modelled in an outdoor shoot last month and just wore a short sleaved top with a jacket on top and I was FREEEZING! I know, I must have been :cuckoo:

Won't make the same mistake this time!

welcome to the forums:wave:

Don't know if you meant pics from when I modelled outdoors, if so all my modelling pictures are on flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/amyoconnor_87
Take a look, the majority of them are taken by Dellipher (Adele@ DG Photography) on here...

If you meant it's useless to help me without first posting pics, then I kinda worked that out after I posted the thread LOL...funny thing is I'm not even blonde

Just take a walk about, relax, enjoy the surroundings!
Stretch you imgaination, e.t.c....

Maybe see if you can use your friends slr for a little while and see how it compares to you point and shoot?

Have fun :)
Tom

Newmillerdam... aside from the obvious ducks and boathouse

See if you can get a decent shot of the Wizard, Owls and Viking carved posts that lay around the lake

Try for a few close-ups of leaves , bark, etc. especially if covered in frost

People & their kids/dogs having fun can be great too - but in these paranoid days be prepared to explain you're a nice tog not a perv

If you head off into the woods proper, you may still get mushrooms aplenty on the floor - it's too late now, but this wood is good for Fly Agarics (the red and white spotty toadstools in fairy books)

If you do photograph ducks, get as low as possible to them so you are looking across the water not into it - so take a large bin-bag with you so you can get low and not too mucky

Lastly - on the parapet between the two sections of the lake - shove Dellipher in and capture her expressions as the cold bites (then run)
