Hi, I've joined this on behalf of my nearly 16 year old daughter
she is taking ICT and Art GCSE and wants to do Graphics for A level

she loves messing around with photos on the computer

she wants to spend her birthday and xmas money on a new camera and I would just like some advice on the best make/model, something that she could expand on in future (i.e. add extra lenses) what's the best at the moment for about £300-£400?

thank you, any advice much appreciated

Hi Jack,

You would be very hard pushed to buy a bad SLR these days most manufactures produce cameras within your budget.

Some current models are;_

Canon EOS 1000D Digital SLR with 18-55mm IS Lens
Nikon D60 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55 VR Lens
Olympus E-420 Digital SLR with 14-42mm and 40-150mm Lenses

As well as offerings from Pentax and Samsung who offer similar models ( mainly because for all intents and purposes they are the same company when it comes to SLR cameras.

This comes with a tele zoom as well as a standard lens and is within your budget,

If this is your first camera purchase I suggest visiting a photo dealer and letting your daughter play around with the different models.

You will pay a small premium when buying from the high street , but good photo dealers are worth their weight in gold if you need advice or if something goes wrong.

Hopes this helps

i second that advice let her have a play with the models in your price range and chose the one she likes best.

Also get her to sign up she will learn loads on here :)

that's great
thank you
I'll have a look at the models you mentioned

I suggest a Nikon D80, it's a very good camera with a good stock lens and is very durable. I think they're around £500 new but a lot of people will sell because they will upgrade to the D90 so you might be lucky to get a good second hand one. Personally, I don't like the look and feel of Canon and wouldn't consider Sony (even though people are very happy with either)!.

The best thing to do is to go to a shop with a wide selection of cameras (maybe even a shop which carriers second hand cameras) and hold some and get some professional advice.
