Hi, looking for some advice, I presently own a Olympus E-400 and am starting a college course this October and am having problems trying to decide whether to hang onto my camera and buy some additional lenses or whether to upgrade and buy a new camera??

But then comes the harder question Canon or Nikon?
Having read and read the reviews im leaning towards the Nikon but how do others think on this subject?

Any advice welcome!

Many thanks Tracy

from what i hear there is nothing wrong with the oly, why you looking to change?

Probably because everyone that I talk to thats starting the course seems to be using either a Canon or Nikon and also the fact that Olympus lenses are SOOOO expensive and there doesnt seem to be the variety that the others seem to have (but I could be wrong here, lol).

olympus lens are top quality thats why they cost a lot also why when you are just starting a course do you want to go start learning the ins and outs of a new system im a nikon user but bought my son an oly for xmas last year he recons its better than mine:D wont you have enough on your plate with your studies without having to learn a new system sounds like camera envy imho:lol::lol::nikon:

Lol, you might be right there about camera envy, all I keep hearing is how wonderful the Nikon is ???
Will look out for some good deals for some extra lenses for the camera I already have and if anyone has any good sites to look at, than please let me know?

Many thanks for all the advice.

There is something to be said for being able to swap kit amongst your class and try different stuff but I don't think it's worth bailing out of the kit you have for that alone.

Photography should be about expressing yourself in your images and that's a journey that's not best started by following the herd.

There may well be more options for lenses with nikon (or canon) but as long as you have a wide, a tele, something in the middle and a macro, it's all covered.

If all you have is the E-400 and the kit lens I'd be tempted to ditch it and move to canon or nikon just because you'll be able to borrow bits of kit of course mates to borrow and it will also be easier to pick up and share tips with users o similar kit.

Yes, so far ALL I have is the E-400 and the standard lens that came with it!
If I was going to change was looking at the Nikon D90 which is due to come out and looks a good camera and at a reasonable price!

Or even get the D80 which still looks a really good camera!

Does anyone else think that this would be a good idea?

Thanks again for all your help.

If you insist on changing I would go for a second user Nikon or Canon and spend the cash saved on good glass... however my point and guess digital camera for the last 6 years was an Olympus C4040Z.

i agree, changing to something your classmates have will benefit as guides and tips can be shared. lenses can be borrowed whilst you start your collection.
remember Glass is for life, body's come and go.

Wait for the D90 to hit the shops then get an end-of-line D80 at a bargain price! (If you feel you simply HAVE to swap systems...) OR, wait until you've had a play with some classmates' equipment (fnar, fnar) so you have a better idea as to what you're after.

Rather than change now, wait until you start your course. You will then find where the limitation are with your existing camera (if any). It may be that all will be fine for some time. Also you get the chance to try other peoples cameras and decide which model you want to change to (if at all)

Ok, now a SERIOUS problem, my son got my camera out last night when I was out and DROPPED it on a wooden floor, so I now have NO camera grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

So I need now advice on what I should now buy, im looking for a camera that will last for a fair amount of time, im hoping to take my photography (after my course) to at least a Semi-Professional level, so need one that will cope with that, my interests so far as wildlife, childrens photos and nature! Would also like to maybe be able to cover Weddings.

I have no lenses to worry about (it broke with the camera) so I have a fresh start :)

Any advice or if anyone has further questions then please ask!

Many thanks Tracy.

both the camera and lens busted are you sure the body is fubard usually one survives!

No, I am not going to bother as its been having problems anyway with the flash and to be honest I was going to upgrade at some point soon, so I think that I would rather look to getting a new one!

Also took it into local Camera shop and they said for how much it is worth im porbably better getting a new one!

Thanks anyway.
