Hi All, Wonder if someone could offer some advice as to suitable camera settings for an Experience my family have gifted me at Knockhill, Fife driving Knockhill's E type..

My grandson will be using my D90 to record the event and I was thinking the 70 - 300mm 4.5 - 5.6 would be OK if we upped the ISO a bit, say to 1600 and focus set to AFc (continuous) and shot at shutter priority at around 1/1000secs. I think it would be too much to ask him to take slow speed panning shots at this stage!

Although my grandson is good with a camera, neither of us has much motorsport experience, so if somebody could offer any advice before hand, it would be much appreciated!

Many thanks,

Ernie

I do a lot of photography at Knockhill, and I mostly use my 100-400 lens, though a 70-200 is almost ideal at the hairpin. Knockhill often have their own photographers there at these events, and you can buy their photos on-site. Unless it is a really dull day, then ISO 400 should be high enough, as much more can give too much noise in the photos if you want to print a large print.

1/1000 might be a bit on the fast side, I would agree with Andrew and suggest somewhere around 1/320 to 1/500 should give acceptably sharp images from a head-on or 3/4 frontal view.

Lens will be fine, ISO is weather related but don't think I have ever needed 1600 there, 100 to 400 is my usual range.

Shutter speed, I agree with John.

The problem at Knockhill is the weather is nearly always changing

Thanks for the advice, folks.....the weather turned out to be foul with driving rain and wind. Although we took some photos based on the advice received here, the outcome was disappointing and we will probably use the on-site photos as suggested. Hopefully we will come back in better weather and get something worth posting!

The driving experience was good, though, and now realise how pampered we are with the mod cons of modern cars!
