My girlfriends prom is coming up, and i am attending. And a few people have asked me to my camera to take some shots. So i thought it would be a good experience outside of my usual scene (gig photography).

My first dilemma occurs in what lens to take. I have the standard kit lens, and a 50mm 1.8. Im wearing my kilt, so the bag im taking isnt really gonna have room i dont think for two lenses. So which one to take?

I'm not going as a pro to take pictures so nothing liek backdrops and lighting stuff. I'm just gonna have to make do with what i have.

I'm not used to taking photo's of people and telling them what to do as such. If anyone has advice or shots they have done it would be greatly appreciated!

The best photos from my daughters prom were not the posed photos but the "off the cuff ones" I took 100's outside while they were waiting for there friends. I just stepped back a bit and took what I saw.

You'll want something a bit wider than 50mm for group shots. You'll have people pulling you all over asking for shots with their friends.

Best of luck with it.

Good luck with it, Was supposed to go and take some at my friends but was ill. Just had a look at your flickr i love your gig photos!

flashgun would be the way forward as kit is too slow and the 50 is too long, any chance of picking up a 30mm f1.4 before hand that would give you the est of both worlds and is standard on a crop body

I am assuming your body is crop...
