Hi, I've been out of photography for some time now (10 years or more) and am really keen to get back into it again.

I still have two lenses that I used with my old Nikon F50 film camera and would appreciate your advice on whether these lenses are still useful or effective with current DSLRs. I am in the market for a new DSLR and have been looking at Canon (450D or 40D) although I may consider Nikon again if I can still use these 2 lenses.

They are a Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1:4-5.6D and a Tamron AF 172DN 70-300mm 1:4-5.6. Have lenses improved much since I purchased these?

I would appreciate any expert advice on this before deciding on my new camera. I love the forum BTW, some great stuff on here for newbies like myself.

Those lenses should still fit I believe.

They will fit all the Nikon DSLR range but I dont think they will autofocus with the D40 /D60/D90/D5000 ( and probably the new D3000) as there is no focus motor in these cameras nor your lenses.
Nothing wrong with older lenses though, I have an old Nikon 70-210 D lens that is superb.

D90 has a focus motor...........

Thanks folks, I appreciate the info. Not sure if the funds will stretch far enough for the D90. Looks like I may as well start again from scratch.

try to find a second hand D80 it has a focus motor and is a fine camera.

What about a used D70s, plenty around at decent prices and good value for money?
