Just recieved my 580exII and want to use it off camera with my 430ex. I don't know whether to go for the canon st-e2 or put an order in for a set of pocket wizards II which includes 2 tranceiver/recievers.

Question:

1) advantages / disadvantages of both
2) with the wizards i place 1 on my camera and the other on my 580, can i set the 580 to master so when it fires it will also trigger the 430? or do i need a third wizard to fire it? and if so how will it connect to the 430 as it has no pc sync?

thanks all

to connect a pocket wizard to a 430 you need a hotshoe to pc adapter, that bit I know :D

the canon wireless stuff gets a bad rep for range and reliability in the sun

pocket wizards give godlike range and reliability

I reckon if you can pw the 580 and have it fire the 430 you just lost your reliability and will then have to have them in line of sight, so kinda makes splashing a coupla hundred quid on pw's pointless

Yeah that does make sense, recon I am just gonna get 3 pocket wizards and be done with it, however being unable to change the flash power output direct from the camera (as with the st-e2) means is gonna have to be manual setting which is a shame.

I like manual setting, same as I use it for normal modes - but I use ebay triggers and started with it (AV makes me angry sometimes)

I've just been thru this dilemma. I have had a 580 for a while now so opted to buy two 430's and use them off camera with the 580 as master on camera. I've only just got them yesterday so can say how its working out but I'm excited lol.

Mick.
