Hello everyone

I've been a member on here for a while but not used the website for well over 6 months now, not sure why I'll blame my toddler for keeping me busy!

Anyway, I'm very interested in photography and would probably call myself an amateur photographer with a hell of alot still to learn! However, my friends see my pictures and keep asking me to take some for them (so I suppose I must be doing something right!). This has worked out well so far if they have just been family portrait shots, but I have been asked to cover a christening for a friend of her twin daughters and this is where I need advice....

I haven't taken pictures in a church before, I have a Canon 550D camera with 3 lenses in my kit bag 85mm that doesn't zoom (sorry don't know the proper word for this!), the standard 18-55mm and a 50mm that also doesn't zoom.

My questions are, which camera setting is best to use in these situations? I was thinking AV but they only want a few posed shots and really the background should be in focus so I suppose I could just set it to a high f stop?? I'm worried about the lighting in the church. Also lenses, what do you guys use for things like this? oh and should I take a tripod?

Any other advice would also be appreciated.

Thanks

tripods are not always welcome in a church, best to ask 1st
you'll need one though of you want the background to be in focus as with low light plus a small aperture would give a very slow shutter speed

Go and have a practise without the friends being there get a feel for it- I would use your kit lens 18-55mm

heres a couple I shot In Wells Cathederal, low light so I shot from a small pew as I could'nt use my tripod :bang:

Wow I love those pictures, thank you for sharing them and for the advice.

I have emailed the church to see if they'll allow me to go and practise. It's not local and i'm not sure if churches are open to the public anymore?!? The one over the road certainly isn't apart from when events are happening.

Thanks again

always best to ask the Vicar for permission- he may let you use a tripod if youre shooting at a quiet time ( ie NOT Sunday )

good luck anyhow - luck forward to seeing your images

by the way a fixed lens is called a prime lens

That's it a 'prime lens'! Cheers Les!

A photographer said that to me the other day!! My biggest problem with photography is remembering all the information! Think I need to get on the brain training!!

Just a quick hello and welcome....... and to agree with the answers already posted:thumbs:

Another hello from Milton Keynes.... And my first ever post! Always been a bit nervous of posting (not sure why), but coincidentally I found a small church round the corner from me which is no longer in use. Apparently it has a load of wall paintings which were uncovered not so long ago, so now all I have to do is get the balls to ask the keyholder if I can go in and take pictures :D

I would- sounds like an idea location

It's called St Lawrences church in Broughton. For anyone that knows the area, you can just about make out the church through the trees when standing on the bridge (which will also be a target for my camera!)
