I'm about to embark on a video shoot across a number of exotic countries. (lucky me..)

My kit includes 5D, 17-40L, 50mm F1.8 and a 135L and some other video specific equip. I've acquired. After some testing Im seeing the 50mm to be an important focal length for this project.

As Im shooting video I will be using manual focus, but as you probably know the focus ring on the 50mm 1.8 could be suitably described as a "wizards sleeve". Trying to pull focus with this while capturing with is not going to be smooth.

I'm thinking about getting the 1.4 and would like to know if it has a nice smooth focus ring with some friction on it. My guess is that its miles better than the 1.8, I just thought I'd ask.

(note: I dont have budget for a follow focus or any other video tech as video is just a hobby..)

the focus ring on the f/1.4 is pretty cack as well - you can feel the gears meshing and it might cause you to "jerk" the focus a bit. Honestly, go and try one in your local Jessops or something and you'll see what I mean. It's not a real USM motor so it doesn't have the smoothness of lenses like the 85mm f/1.8.

hmm. ok thanks for your help.

Alternatively Im looking at the 35mm f2? Does anyone have both and can compare?

Not keen to step up to L series :'(

Actually Im being Canon-blind. What about the Sigma 1.4?

Supposed to be better build quality I hear...

went for the Sigma 50mm.

Focus ring actually feels quite stiff but better that than super loose.
