Advice on a new monitor (photo editing and gaming)

Placed an order for a new AMD PC, and it's about time I bought a new monitor too.

I'm looking for a 144Hz that will handle photo editing and gaming. Price range up to roughly £200 and cannot go higher than 24" due to room on the desk.

CPU: 5900x
MOBO: Asus Rog Strix X570-F Gaming
GPU: 12GB RTX 3060

I was thinking about:
  • ASUS VG248QE 24"
  • AOC G2590PX
  • ASUS TUF GAMING VG259Q

The only one of those monitors you've mentioned above that has an IPS panel is the last one, the other two are TN panels that will be useless for image editing.

But good for gaming :) though I understand the photo editing requirement is restrictive.

I’m not sure £200 is enough for a good photo editing monitor, certainly for a gaming one it is.

Yes they're two conflicting requirements really, and £200 isn't a big enough budget to get a monitor that's good at both.
 
I should have mentioned those monitors I mentioned are not set in stone, I'll go for which ever monitor will suit my needs.

If I can get away with it, I don't want to go over £200 on a monitor. But things may change in the future.

Not looking to buy one just yet, I'm just 'window shopping' and seeing what's out there for the time being.
 
Which is more important to you? Gaming or editing? This will help guide the recommendations.

  • Gigabyte G27F 27"

I thought you couldn't go for a 27" screen?

Having just bought a high end base unit, save a little more and buy the gigabyte M27Q. I have one. It's good for both games and editing.

The gigabyte M27Q is a 1440p monitor. My 3060 can only handle 1080.

Regarding your first question, people change, and like I said I'm window shopping

Curious - I thought the 3060 could do 1440 for gaming - it can do 3 screens at 1440 easily for editing. If you don't want to game at 1440 it will be fine running at lower resolution.

As for screen size, I understood you *could not* rather than didn't want to.

Nope. The 3060 can only do 1080, while the 3060ti can do 1440.

Sadly the 3060ti keeps going out of stock where I'm buying the PC from. And I cannot change the GPU now because it's in the building stage.

I'm not in a rush in buying a monitor, I may consider a 1440 then I would only have to upgrade the GPU at some point (if I ever upgrade it).
 
The radion card I bought can only game at 1080 but displays fine at 1440 for processing. I'd planned to buy a 3060 but the other card came up first. Even a 1050 can do 1440 except when gaming.

Looks great for gaming but for image editing, reading what little the spec sheet says I hope you don't struggle but frankly I would not buy a gaming screen for editing. The two purposes are incompatible!

As posted by another member above in post #7 you need to make a choice and you have but not one I would have made as I don't game and need to see the quality of my images...... especially when it comes to editing for printing. Of course everyone is different and YMMV.
 
That should be fine, given your priorities.
 
I've been following this with interest, as I'm thinking about adding a screen as a second or alternate screen for my 2014 15" MacBook Pro, which is badly affected by staingate, but otherwise still reasonably OK. The only 24" IPS panel I could find with 4K capability is the LG 24UD58. It's described as a gaming monitor, but it has IPS and 3840x2160 resolution, costs £250. Like the OP I'm extremely limited on desk space. I don't sell images, and only shoot for my own enjoyment, and at the moment mostly black and white, too. Would this be a reasonable editing monitor? Thanks
 
Just as a preliminary test, I temporarily connected the Dell 22" monitor from the family Win PC to the MBP via HDMI, and plugged in the Win keyboard and mouse. Once I'd adjusted a few settings, it worked quite well. Quite hard to get on with the mouse wheel, but basically a setup like that could work for me. I was very surprised that the Win keyboard worked so well, with the Windows key acting as a Command key. The screen looked a bit washed out at first on its default Dell profile, but switching to Apple RGB made it look pretty close to the MacBook.

Not sure whether it's best to close the MBP and operate entirely on the larger screen, or use the MBP screen for most day to day operations and the extra monitor for graphics display. I guess that's something I'd have to experiment with. Capture One 21 does have a dual monitor mode, I see.
 
Sorry not to offer any useful advice - we're traveling, and research using the phone is a bit tricky.
