Our 11/12 year old crossed fell terrier has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. He is not at all happy just now and is currently spending his second day at the vets to be given intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

Hopefully he will make a full recovery. Reading online about the condition one of the recommendations is to feed the dog a low fat diet. I've also read that some standard dog foods that claim to be low in fat aren't that low(though I have failed to find what percentage fat in the food constitutes 'low fat') and more specialised dog food is needed.

Does anyone have any experience of feeding a dog a low fat diet because of pancreatitis, or for any other reason, and if so, what food do you use?

I will ask the vet about low fat food but would be grateful for any comments for those who have experience of this.

Thanks

Dave

Well boiled chicken with rice and vegetables is an easy one to prepare if he'll eat it.

You'll certainly want to avoid commercially made dog food if you can. It takes very little effort to prepare good food for your best mate IMO.

Batch cook and freeze has always been my favoured way of preparing meals for me and my dog. (y)

Just came to say , chicken & rice but I see @Sky has beaten me to it!

I have in the past pressure cooked whole small chickens for the purpose. 15 mins at high renders the bones crumbly. Not sure what the fat content of that would be, higher that just muscle no doubt.

I’m sure there will be commercial complete foods that are low fat though no doubt eye watering price.

Thanks for the replies. We have used chicken and rice as a bland meal for him in the past. Just have to persuade him to eat more now. He has been off his food for a few days but the vet is happy that he ate even a little bit yesterday.

Whatever the vet recommends don't feel obligated to buy it from the vet... They often mark up more than 100% versus RRP when other outlets selling exactly the same product discount from the RRP.

You could add a little liver (any kind) since most dogs will fill for that and bones. Bonemeal is very attractive but I don’t know of a food-type source. It’s impossible to use blood fish and bone on the garden if you’ve a dog — ah, fish too.
