Paintshop Pro 7 has three sharpening filters...
'SHARPEN MORE'
This is very aggressive sharpening and usually too much for most shots .
'SHARPEN'
Far less aggressive and usually usable on a lot of images.
'UNSHARP MASK'
The best way to sharpen usually (unless the image is very very soft) in very small increments.
In the shot above, the original was so soft I used the 'Sharpen More' filter. Then tried adding the 'Sharpen Filter' which was just a little too much, so finally applied USM a few times, till it was just starting to look over-sharpened, then undid the last USM step.
I don't think there's any easy or standard way to sharpen - it's always a judgement call and depends so much on the original image.
