I have had an E mail from Adobe telling me I have an update due - this is in the shape of a 50% price increase. My monthly subs are going up from £9.98 a month in November to £15.96 a month ad infinitum or more accurately £186.96 a year. Not on my watch! They can go and rip someone else off. They have succeeded in pushing me off the edge and freefalling into my traditional darkroom.

Bring it on I am out on parole! Analogue rules - OK!

Those prints I uploaded yesterday were all darkroom prints, scanned before being uploaded. I have an older version of Paintshop Pro which will still work (I think from 2015) and Adobe can start looking for another village ejit - I just resigned.

I have both LR6 and LrC on this computer, plus On1. If subs get silly then I'll be letting LrC go.

I would like to think that Adobe customers like me do their sums and walk away 50% is way over the top. Some won't because they use it for work and it will be tax allowable. I would like an explanation before I tell them to find another succur

My understanding is that the email gives you three options.

  1. Cancel your subscription
  2. Continue to pay monthly but at the increased rate of £15 per month
  3. Switch to paying annually at £120 per annum (£10 per month)

Adobe have informed me that when my current subscription to the 20gb Photography plan expires they will charge me £99.29 per annum.

John, read the text properly and you will see that the increase only applies to those who want to continue paying monthly. If that's what you do, then why not switch to an annual payment and keep the price the same as you are paying now? That's what I did, see....

Thanks for the explanation. I was going to 'phone Adobe tomorrow and ask for an clarification why. I will still 'phone them and confirm that you are correct and if so will pay up front.

But how do you switch to yearly payments from monthly. I can’t see an option anywhere for that ?

I rang them up. (They have a UK number and give the usual type of multi choices what you want to speak about then transferred to elsewhere but the call charge is always a UK one) The number is 0207 365 0735. The best time to call is in the morning and you usually get through quite quickly but by the time the rest of the world wakes up you could be on the 'phone for a while. Also they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Why punish people for paying monthly?
It's all about cash flow - they prefer a smaller amount up front rather than an overall larger amount paid monthly. There are probably additional banking costs etc to handle monthly receipts

I bought a couple of years worth of Adobe subscription on offer on Amazon for about £80 per year. I'm at the point of thinking when that runs out I won't be renewing. There are now good free options, such as Darktable, Digikam and Gimp and much cheaper options like Affinity. Adobe are just pricing themselves out of the market.

I could not see the annual option either but contacted Adobe and they sorted it for me.

I did it all through the web chat. It wasn't too painful, took 15 mins or so to cancel the current paid monthly subscription and buy a new annual plan

Why punish people for paying monthly?
Because they stop. It's relatively common for a yearly license on software to be 8-10x a monthly licence.

Whether you see that as a surcharge or a discount depends.

Because it costs them more to handle multiple monthly payments than fewer annual ones. I doubt the difference between the monthly and annual figures reflect the actual additional costs but it is what it is.

But if you stop (i.e. cancel) your "monthly" subscription with Adobe they will bill you for the remainder of the 12 month period. It's not really a monthly subscription it is an annual one that is paid in monthly instalments - see their terms and conditions.
