Is there a specific method when it comes to adjusting / setting coupled rangfinders?

Is it best:

1. to set whilst focused at infinity?

2. to set whilst focused at minimal focusing distance?

3. to set at an intermediate focusing distance?

Or does it not matter?

[disclaimer!]I am NOT an expert!!![/disclaimer!]

I would say that if it's a relatively easy thing to do, set it up at a normal working distance then check it at close and infinity distances. If it's not a simple job, I would leave it to an expert to do the adjustment.

It may depend on the rangefinder, but with Leicas you adjust them when focused at infinity.

Ok thanks I'll have a play and see what comes about ..... a little finicky perhaps but it can't be beyond the average, non practical, guy can it?:D

It's actually not too tricky - I've successfully adjusted the rangefinder on my Leica and Mamiya 6. As long as it's done very gently, tweaking it a tiny bit at a time and checking carefully between each change it should be easy enough.

On most rangefinders itt
is very easy with settings for both vertical and horizontal adjustment
some times an adjusting screw is hidden behind a dummy screw cap.
on afew cameras the entire housing or top plate has to be removed.
not sure it would be worth fisking one of those.
