Yes
i have done a search for this and found conflicting opinions of wether to switch on or off in menu.

Please any experienced shooters what is the best setting for this on or off.

I only shoot raw and use aperture to process those raw files

Thanyou for any advice

Aperture will not read the ADL information on a NEF file. Nikon software will.

Thanks Nick and Simon and Simon is it true that Raw files dont utilize the ADL settings?oops just realised you already answered Nef being raw. Ok is it something that is worth using if i was using nikon software or can one get same effect using other settings in aperture?
Thanks

I think this is where the confusion comes in.

ADL info is in the RAW, (NEF) file but is not picked up by Aperture. Therefore, when using Aperture, or any other non Nikon software, it's pointless having it on.

I've played about with it on my d3200 and prefer to alter shadows/highlights myself. Sometimes I like lots of shadow, especially in b&w.

I too only shoot jpeg with Active D Lighting (ADL) off.

I am assuming ADL and D Lighting (DL) are the same thing but ADL is set before shooting and DL is set after shooting.

On my D5300, DL is found on the Retouch Menu ... and once used, a separate "D Lit" image will be saved to your card.
