I have looked in the manual under troubleshooting tips but there is nothing for when there is a funny antiseptic smell and then a loud bang!
I just checked and it is only 15 years old :(
 
That will be the Capacitor(s) reaching its end of life, best not to smell to closely its not good for you. 15 years seems rather good ;)
 
Your local Currys or recycling site will accept it for disposal. The thing is now pretty toxic and dangerous. It will stink up everything near it. I had to bin some extenders and now my Lidl cordless power tools developed that smell. You just can't win
